Need some spy tips

[quote1212766815=AzzNik]

Don't do what I do. I'm available for "how not to play a spy" lessons.
[/quote1212766815]

Me too. I epicly fail as a spy. And soldier. And demo. And pyro. And...

I have a tip and a question.

Tip: Read all of these posts, they're all good tips. :P

Question: Does your speed change when going to scout? I notice a change on heavy, but I can't think if your speed changes disguised as scout. If not, that would be a real clue to being a spy if the scout is running as fast as you are.

I generally find that disguising as little as possible is your ticket to success. When I play spy (and I'm nowhere near as good as Tanooki or Jehuty) I run, undisguised, with my team, using my revolver to provide supporting fire. You can racck up kills and assists this way, it's quite a powerful weapon. When I see an opening, That's when I make my move. If I have to get a fair distance to get to my target area, I disguise as a friendly scout, just to make my hitboxes smaller. I have no faith in disguises, so I don't care if I'm obvious or not, and no enemy generally expects a spy to be disguised as a member of the other team. I get to a good position, then cloak. I use my cloak until I'm where I want to be, put on an enemy disguise at the last moment simply to avoid sentry guns, nail my target, cloak, and get out of there, disguising as an enemy again ony if there are sentries around.

In short, disguise is for sentries, not human enemies.

Also, if you are running around disguised as an enemy, don't be a noob and run with your knife out. I can't tell you how many times I've facepalmed myself after bumping into a disguised spy who then proceeds to try to chase me down with his knife. Have your revolver out, and back up if you run into someone. Revolver will kill any unbuffed class if you land all six shots.

Avoid pyros like the plague, unless you have a good vantage point to get behind them.

Dropping down on enemies and following them is wonderful if there's a single enemy, like that soldier who just respawned. I love waiting above spawn rooms like on dustbowl stage 1 or goldrush 1, waiting for a respawn, dropping down and nailing him for another 15 second respawn. Try it twice in a row and see if they switch to pyro :P

I can only direct you to this video for some good tips, and it will save room (and effort :P).
I can't stress the stab lightly tip enough!

1) get as good as you can at the revolver
2) try not to stab pyro's unless your sure you can get him (eg: he's standing by a dispenser and spraying a doorway)
3) save your cloak (crutial)
4) find alternate routes to the enemies spawn point.
5) if and when you actually make it to the enemy spawn, i would suggest to hide and wait for at least half cloak, then sap all the entrance TP's (easy points), start running for the front of the battle, cloak about halfway through and watch the engies run by, then sap all their gear up front =P
6) another huge part of being a spy is knowing when to switch classes. a spy can play for as long as he likes. in my experience though, a good spy can play for about 30-45 minutes, then the enemies finally catch on, then 1/3 of their team turn pyro.
7) the best strategy if your going for kills is to make them one at a time, then run and hide for the next oppertunity, while this is a good strategy, you will most likely be caught after 3 or 4 kills. if you are going for a massive stabbing run of death, always start at the back, usually snipers, then go from there moving from the back to the front. if you are caught run somewhere they wouldn't expect you, so don't run back to either spawn point, try inside a nearby house.
8) stand on peoples heads as much as possible, then crouch stab their heads, it counts as a backstab.
9) when annoying engies, stab THEN sap, but if their away from their SG's sap it, wait for a few seconds, cloak where you think he won't see you, then stab-sap away.
10) try not to decloak in an obvious place (eg: corner, behind a box) its a very important part of spy to act the part of your disguise, if necesary to decloak in a group of people, try to do it mid battle, they'll be less likely to notice you.
11) probably the most import rule of being a spy is to solve a problem that your team can't handle with ubers alone. (eg: the entire red team went engie, and have a 16 SG farm behind that wall). so even though the spy is alone for most of the game, he's still part of the team.

hope this helps, i have over 90 hours logged as spy.

I just started playing spy recently (HAHA FUNNY I KNOW) and one thing that I learned when playing an offensive role, is to not go after the same engineer every time or the same sentry gun. If you fail the first time, they will be expecting you again, so it will be much harder. Wait a little while to try and then try to go for the kill. Also, you gotta be patient. I am kind of having a hard time with that one right now, but I will get over it I hope :P

Sandman has some great pointers, I would listen to what he has to say for starters.

Oh, and offensive spy only works for a couple of deaths. Let's take dustbowl for example. After a few runs into the base on offense, they kind of start looking for you every time and expecting you, so go a different class. On defense, though, you can play it the whole round and be effective (best for taking out medics so that the other team can't uber). It's perfect when you stealth to the back of a spawn wave and start taking them out from the back. That is just my advice. But it is extremely fun to play once you get the hang of it :D

Spy isnt my best class, but I have a few good techniques on playing it effectively.

1. Never disguise as a scout, medic or spy - People will see your slow speed as scout, expect you to heal them as medic and people always check a non disguised spy

2. Try to avoid decloaking right behind an enemy if you are going to stab them, this could alert a nearby enemy and get you killed, always try to find a safe spot in a corner or out of the way, then move up behind your target

3. Wait until you are FULLY cloaked/disguised before running out into the open, I have been accused of cheating as sniper so many times by spies who run out cloaked but they still have the smoke effect around them, and get shot. Also dont run out into gunfire because if people see a cloaked spy, that will become their number one priority.

4. Always dodge people - Someone will immediately blow your brains out if you try to run straight through them, its best to try and predict their movements and dodge them. A useful tip for 2fort is when you are crossing the bridge cloaked with enemies coming your way, its best to jump onto the rails at the side of the bridge and let them pass instead of trying to run through them.

5. If an engineer only has a level one and possibly two sentry, stab them square in the back, use your hotkey to switch to sappers and place one on the sentry, it is possible with a level 3 sentry but most of the time you will die. Also, if an engineer is set up in a position where he is against a wall or corner, cloak, jump on his head, sap his gun from above then stab him in the top of the head, works every time for me.

6. ALWAYS keep hotkeys for your spy equipment, I dont understand how Xbox players can effectively play spy considering they cant do everything as fast meaning its mostly suicide stabs.

7. Prioritize targets - Dont stab anyone infront of a sentry, and its much easier to stab a player when they are fighting, you dont catch heavies turning around to check for spys while they are busy firing/being fired on. Also, only stab if you have an escape route unless you dont care about dying.

8. Camp and loop - This is a very effective technique if used properly, if you are defending or on a CTF map pick a good spot where you can get to the enemy without them seeing you, then stab, loop and repeat. A good example of this (And my favorite) is the hole which you can drop down to get to the front of the base just outside of the main spawn, it can also be done with the hole coming out of the secondary spawn but not as many people use this path. Sit at the back where people entering the base cant see you and as soon as an enemy passes, check for anyone with them then follow. They will most likely pause when getting to the courtyard if your engineers have sentries there, which is a great time to stab, run up past the spawns and get straight back into your spot, ready for anyone else coming in.

Thats all I can be bothered to right ^^ I think I have only ever played a whole round as spy once, the fact that most TF2 servers dont have FF on makes it annoying that one pyro on the opposite team can ruin it for all of the spies on your team.

I disguise as scout all the time, both friendly and enemy. In fact, it's my disguise of choice. I use disguise as little as possible, so I take advantage of the smaller hitboxes as a scout.

My goal is to not be seen, including when I'm disguised. They can't spycheck you if they don't notice you.

2. Try to avoid decloaking right behind an enemy if you are going to stab them, this could alert a nearby enemy and get you killed, always try to find a safe spot in a corner or out of the way, then move up behind your target

You only get that smoke effect if you disguise WHILE you're cloaking, and I think it's an intentional penalty to add a bit of strategy. Either disguise beforehand, or cloak, wait the full second, then disguise while FULLY cloaked, and you won't smoke at all. If you hit cloak and then disguise immediately, that smoke lasts a good three seconds, which is a considerable chunk of your cloak.

Stab and sap works just fine on ANY level sentry gun, as long as it isn't facing you. You have plenty of time to swap to sapper as long as the gun is facing the other way. I don't bother with engineers or their guns unless I have the opportunity to stab and then sap.

6. ALWAYS keep hotkeys for your spy equipment, I dont understand how Xbox players can effectively play spy considering they cant do everything as fast meaning its mostly suicide stabs.

a great loop that I got killed twice in a row on dustbowl yesterday is the second cap of stage 2, where the tunnels are. a good spy can run through there a couple times stabbing as they go.

FF isn't an option on ANY tf2 servers. If you find one, it's running a mod.
