Ventrilo Problems

Hey folks -

Has anyone had a sudden huge drop in performance of TF2 after installing Ventrilo? I finally joined the crowd and installed yesterday, but when I fire up TF2 my performance is through the floor...completely unplayable. I really figured my rig could handle both, but perhaps not.

So, for those of you with some experience in Ventrilo, are there some settings I need to play with, or most likely is this just not an option for me?

One other piece of information - I'm playing the game in windowed mode, and I've got the overlay installed. Does the overlay cause problems?

What kinda rig you got? Hell, on one gig and a AMD 3500 single core Vent and TF2 runs fine.

Ventrilo is known to cause problems with some games, I haven't heard of TF2 but Titan Quest it gave me a lot of grief. Ventrilo uses Direct Sound and Direct Input to detect the push to talk buttons, it could be glitching badly enough to cause a big performance drop. Try having ventrilo at a higher priority than normal, that may give you a quick fix. Can you tell me the specifications of your computer?

yeah - i figured my machine could handle it...maybe it's catching up on something else that's running.

anyway - the rig is:

AMD 64 3800+ Dual Core
2gigs RAM
WinXP 32bit (sp2)
Geforce 6800

obviously not the most up to date, but should be more than enough to run TF2 and Ventrilo together.
