(After writing this I see this is really long. Post contents: Make friends out of game in vent and IRC. Short guide to setting up xchat2 for windows to replace mIRC.)
So I've noticed a good number of threads recently, mostly from new members I think, about getting to know the people in the clan and making new friends. So far the responses have been to get in game and meet people there. While this is the best starting point and works amazingly to meet fellow clan members, there are so many other people that you will not be able to meet in a gaming session on a 32 man server that includes public players. And there are only so many clan only events that you have to make it into a week.
There are a few other places you can go besides Steam to meet some new friends. The forums are pretty obvious but a bit slow and not very good for actually getting to know people. There is also vent, which I do not partake in very much right now because I can't.
Then there is IRC which could be thought of as sped up forums. I hang out in IRC all day because I'm bored at work and all kinds of fun conversations pop up. So far, I think I've met most of the people I know in the clan through IRC. It's worth it to just set it up and let it run, even if you don't want to talk much. Who knows, you may see a conversation you want to talk about and jump right in.
Guides to exist to set Vent and IRC up if you need help with it. Unfortunately the IRC guide is in a sticky area that I don't think many read.

Personally I don't like mIRC, partly because it is trial based and some of the setup was weird for me. I like to use xchat2, which is a simpler IRC client built off a linux version of the program. Following is my own short guide to get into our IRC channel using xchat2 (can be downloaded here http://www.silverex.org/news/):

1) Install it
2) After installing it should bring up a network configuration menu. Enter in your chosen nick and maybe a secondary if someone decides to steal yours.
3) Click the add button and name the network you are going to connect to whatever you want.
4) Click your newly created network and click edit.
5) On the new screen, click add, type in irc.gamesurge.net and hit enter.
6) Check the connect on startup box and type #edgegamers into the "Channels to Join:" box.
7) Click close then connect on the next screen and huzzah you should be connected!
(If any of this is wrong, sorry. I wrote it from screen shots as I amnot at my windows machine now.)
So, come hang out with us in IRC. Helps pass the boredom of a long workday, and is so much more fun the more people we have.
