I know most of you may not care about MGS4, but this matters to people like myself that plan on playing the game and don't want all of the major plot points revealed by childish behavior on the internet. This afternoon on the new Dust Bowl map there were 3 guys with names that were major plot spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 4. I asked if they could be kicked, and the admins said no.

After that they changed the names to more spoilers from the game, and a few eGO folks laughed like it was a really funny joke. You might not care, but others do. One of the reasons I've been playing with eGO for a while now is because you promote a mature place to play the game.

That stuffs completely contrary to how you guys advertise your clan and your servers. I'm really disappointed, and it's a shame that members of your community found it to be humorous when I asked, politely, for them to change their names and they changed them to more spoilers.

Here are the HLstatsX links to them. Their names are listed within. Only check if you don't mind major plot points from MGS4 revealed:

Just to clarify I had no issues with "Hideo Kojima the drug addict." It was the other names that were relevant to plot points.

Edit: Fixed some of my language usage to not sound as harsh as it did. That's not my intent at all.

Wow...this is a serious issue...

I personally haven't been keeping track of MGS4, so I personally do not know of the spoilers or the plot, but I am sure that it would be against the rules to have such names or to post spoilers of any kind it in chat.

Thanks for the reply Booster. I know many people may not care, but I've been waiting for this game forever. I love playing on the eGO servers, but it just sucks to have stuff like that happen. Some of the eGO folks were polite enough to acknowledge me being upset about it. However, I was told there was nothing in the rules about it, and there was nothing they could do about it.

I was in the server at the time. I didn't know if it was against the rules, because we have nothing stated on the issue. However, I did ask that it not be done over voice, because I felt I had no grounds to admin about it since although not funny it didn't seem to be against the rules. Also, for the record I wasn't laughing. I appologize denkigrve that your gaming experience wasn't a pleasent one at that time, however, since this issue has now been posted we should be able to get some guidance on the issue and will know how to deal with it should the situation arise again. We appreciate you being a part of our community and hope to continue to see you back on our servers.

You were fine Ice. It was only one or two folks who had recruit tags, and who I've not played with before. You were actually really polite, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain that there was nothing in the rules about it. I also really appreciate you asking them to change their names as well.

I'll always be back to eGO. You guys are my TF2 home.

maybe they were just trying to psych you out and those arent actually the real spoilers!

They've been posted from screenshots of the strategy guide. I read a blog about how people were doing that, and warning those worried about spoilers to watch out for those that had no shame. I have seen people posting discussion threads all over the net as the same titles in their TF2 names. :(

I'm still going to love the game, but some of those plot points won't have the same impact since I'll be expecting them now.

Iceman,

While there are no rules specifically about this kind of activity do not be afraid to use your judgement in situations like this. As long as you keep your cool and remain respectful to the players in any decisions you make you will not be punished even if later it is found that maybe you went too far. The rules cannot cover all situations and thats why we have people like us to interpret and enforce. Otherwise we would just automate it all and not have to worry.

One can look at this situation in several different ways which makes this a tough one to handle. I personally would view the players with the spoilers in their names as disruptive once it was made known to me that they were spoiling a yet to be released game for someone. Almost to the point of calling it griefing since from the description the players intent was to ruin someone elses experience. A warning to change the names would be issued with a kick/ban to follow if they did not comply.

This is just my take on the situation as described in this thread. Not everyone would agree, and thats ok. If council/advisers state otherwise I would abide by their decisions.

Thanks Nuedar. To be honest I didn't understand to full complexity of the situation. I didn't understand that game had yet to be released I just thought he may have not played it yet. However, I did realize it was some diruption and ask them to stop however like I said I wasn't sure if I had to right to go over admin about it. However now I have a better understanding of these things. Thanks again.

Tell you what, denk. I'll address this issue to the rest of Advisor/Council/DL, and see what their official ruling on the matter is. :)

Wow, this is actually the first time I've heard of people going around with spoilers as their names, I'm actually quite afraid to log onto TF2 now mainly because I've been waiting for MGS4 for years. But now since the issue's been brought up, I'll still think twice about joining a server.. or just check the server information for any admins online, I'm quite glad this has been brought up before I ran into anything like that. Thanks for the head's up, denkigrve, I owe you one.

Thanks for looking into it . I don't want to see something like this to happen in the future to others. It's the same as trolling forums in my eyes.

I guess another potential problem is that admins may not even know that a name is a spoiler. If I had seen one of the examples you stated, I would not know it is a spoiler until it was pointed out for me, by that time it is too late.

Wow, I would have kicked/banned them right away if they didn't change, I've been trying to keep myself spoiler free for MGS4 since it was announced, and I wouldn't want anyones fun ruined in the final days by someone with spoiler names.

It'll all be over after Thursday anywho :)
