Alright, so it's been a hot minute since I've posted my own thread.

So basically, I watch a decent amount of anime, and I can safely say that I enjoy watching it more than western TV shows. At face value, this doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but you would be surprised about how often I am ridiculed for showing that I like anime, like having an anime PFP, listening to Japanese music, having anime merchandise, or even just talking about anime. And it's not even just anime. I get ridiculed for liking Japanese culture in general. I get branded as a weeaboo(most people don't even know what this word means), a pedophile, and a disgusting fat weirdo that masturbates to underage girls that don't exist. A lot of people are super quick to judge me for liking anime and Japanese culture as a whole. I know you are probably thinking that I should just ignore them or just not show that I like anime, but it really isn't that simple. My interests aren't something that I like to just keep to myself. I like to share and talk about the things I like with different people, but I hate being discouraged to do that just because someone is quick to judge me.

Anyway, that's all. Thanks for you time.
What do you guys think?

edit: just thought you guys should know that I'm not any of the things that these people call me

Well, that went from 0 to 100 really quick.
As a fan of anime, I personally get called a weeb and it ends at that.
I personally enjoy Japanese cuisine (Always have also if you don't like it wtf), I like anime, manga, and Japanese fashion.
but I don't really get called names like you have experienced, All I say to people if they seem to start getting hostile about it, I just ignore them. They tend to just give up.

just try not to feed into what they're doing, they are only trying to get a rise outta you so just.... don't care?
if you cant not care, pretend like you don't, they usually stop

Bingo. Lol

Are these people who go to your school? Can I just assume this is high school?

No one in high school watched anime. Wait until you get to college and realize how many geeks there are. Seriously, my school was populated by mostly jocks - didn't play hockey? You suck.

Went to college and we were doing games everyday on breaks, discussing anime, etc etc.

I always felt this was people just growing up and thinking they were "cool" for putting stuff down that wasn't their taste. Then you grow up and no one cares!

But if people are calling you those titles and names (Which are some pretty crappy ones), steer clear of them, big time.

Anime is a great medium for some awesome storytelling and is only growing rapidly each year, especially with how easy it is to access it and major platforms like Netflix dumping huge amounts of money into the production of it.

Only anime I've watched was Bleach and a bit of Attack on the Titan. My class mates just keep pointing it out which annoys me soo hard. I can see how people like it, but me personally I wouldn't watch that type of "weird stuff". I know it's annoying, I guess you can just be slightly rude and tell them to just shut up. Idk, whenever I'm with my friends and someone just tells me something that kinda annoys me I'll just say something like "Shut up, says the one" or "You can't say much".

What do you feel is "weird stuff"? Bleach and AoT are considered fairly mainstream, are you referring to less mainstream shows?

Getting hostile with people is not necessarily always the answer. Kill em' with kindness.

I don't really know how to describe it, I've only watched a bit of anime. Oh ye, the getting hostile with people is kind of just an Irish thing, everyone does it. Like it's just for jokes.

It's ok, in the real world nobody actually cares anymore. Once you finish high school and either start working, go through university, or other, you'll realize just how small high school actually was. You'll start finding people with similar interests. You can't expect everyone to like what you like just like you won't always like what some others like. Yeah, you shouldn't be an ass about it but that's just how some people are.

Even here in Japan, nobody really cares if you like anime or read manga or whatever. I was in Starbucks the other day after filling out some paperwork at city hall and the guy next to me (probably in his 40s or so) was reading One Piece on his phone while enjoying his coffee. I've seen children and adults, both male and female, reading manga on the train, playing Pokemon Go while waiting for a bus,, and even listening to Japanese music! Well, I guess in the case of the last one they just call it music.

As long as you aren't hurting anyone it's not really a big deal. It's only the super extreme hikikomori cases that people actually judge you super hard for. But then again, if that's the way you're living your life you wouldn't even know people are judging you.

solid advice: take in the positive, block the negative.

That is exactly it. In high school no one would admit to watching anime, but once you get into college no one would give two shits if you watch it in front of them. Some of them will probably even ask which one you are watching. More people have watched anime than you think, they just don't want to admit to it.

Only thing I can add, and this is making me feel old, I remember talking about watching anime on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, and my friends in school were surprised I was allowed to watch TV that late. Think they were on around 9 or 10PM usually (Outlaw Star, Tenchi Muyo, Gundam Wing, G Gundam...)

I think it really depends on the people you surround with, and as others have said, just because those in high school make fun of you, there's a big audience of anime lovers. Whether audience, artists, voice actors, animators, etc., if you ever get a chance to, I encourage you to try and go to an anime convention if you never have been to one. It's a big, eye-opening moment for someone who hasn't had the chance to experience a moment where everyone is celebrating their love and appreciation for anime.
