I've always been fascinated by characters like Thanos. They're not motivated by hatred, anger or profit. Instead they're true believers of some principle. What Thanos had wrong was his lack of understanding or faith in the Universe's ability to manage it's own fate and resources. A purge so immediate and expansive wasn't necessary at the time. His zealousness exceeded his reason, and isolated him in a disregard to the voices of others. His principle required the violation and death of others in galaxies he would never see and that's pretty big. He thought he would one day look out at a grateful universe, but instead he created a desperate and vengeful domino effect that would lead to a universal calamity. He was very wrong.
