Tech Help Considering switching to AMD

Hey all, with all the latest talk about how AMD is really starting to dominate the market I would like to get some feedback on what all I should get. I will admit that I used to be huge into Intel (which was justified as they were the dominant force for easily over 15 years), but I love how AMD is really pushing the envelope as well as the fact that the new CEO really shows that she not only cares about her companies products, but about how she is very open about working with the engineers when it comes to the names of the cpus.

However, I need to understand how the technology works as well as a proper education on literally everything. I still know how to build a pc from scratch and do most of the stuff (I'm only going to stay away from liquid cooling as I still don't trust it). I'm sure we have some die hard AMD peeps in the forums, so please feel free to show me articles or even videos on how to understand the cpu's & motherboard chipsets. I also want to apologize in advance if I have typed something out wrong as its been literally years since I have done a complete build.

Anything r7-r9 should be paired with an x470 or x570 motherboard and at least a 750w psu along with a recent midrange gpu

Gamer's Nexus has great info on cpu's / motherboards. The thing I always try to remember is for AMD ram speed matters more vs Intel where the returns are not as noticeable. The R5 3600 is really good right now and I highly sudgest for it's price/ performance ratio. Also on the storage side, StoreMI is software for AM4 Sockets that can use an extra cheep ssd to use as cashe for a HHD and speed it up. (I may not have as much info as some in this forum but hopes this helps.)

It still at the end of the day comes down to your needs and budgets. But overall right now for most people and your average gamer, the AMD stuff is nicely priced and performs very well. Many people will still swear by one or the other but it's all dependant on your need. For gaming, by all means, Intel tends to outperform AMD still by a little bit (the gap has closed a lot), but it's to the point you're only noticing it if you are trying to do some high end AAA titles and smash it all together with a killer graphics card.

But, AMD is killing it in the multitasking department. There's also the pricepoint. You'll likely not notice a 5% difference in performance... when you're spending probably $150-200 less.

There's a LOT of good write ups on everything, but as i say, budgets and needs trump it all.

Hey guys, im noticing on Reddit where Microcenter has a Rysen 2600x for $100. I need to understand if this is a great deal or if I should wait. There's comments about how it was down to $80 like a few weeks ago. Just curious to get an idea of if I should go with this or if I should look at a better cpu.

Gaming should be r5 + b450 or if you want wait for the b550.

DO NOT GO WITH THE 5700 XT its a beast at FPS but sucks with stability

Edit: the 5700 XT is alright after the new driver it took them a minute but it works now

I was Intel fan, but recently i got a Ryzen 9 3900X and I am SUPER PLEASED with the Processor. IS A FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDGING BEEEEEEEEEEEEAST.

Hey all, im aware that this post is a little over 3 weeks old but I just wanted to get clarification on this since Im still learning about AMD. Im guessing the difference between the 2600 & 2600X is that the X cpu can be overclocked or is there another reason for the X part?

X is faster clock speed (by about 300mhz) and better cooler comes with it. If you intend to OC, X it is.

So apparently Newegg just put the Ryzen 5 2600 on sale for $110. While ive been looking for a used one on eBay, I think this kinda discount will warrant me going after it.

Definitely worth a shot. In the current times, I wouldn’t expect to see it drop much more since sales may be hit and miss for a long time. Buy it up!

Well unfortunately the nearest Microcenter is a 4 hour drive to another city in which I have to bypass other cities. I ended up going with Newegg & it saves me gas $. Unfortunately we have a local computer store & theyre selling stuff for like 150% of their retail price. I have no idea how theyre still in business...

pretty basic comment, but..

i will say that i have been using AMD nearly my entire PC gaming career.

the first and only PC i bought had an intel processor and i hated it. it was much more expensive when compared to AMD and it was slower to me. of course, this may very well be biased.

i must agree with Simon. it's cheaper and it performs better.

AMD fanboy until it's a good day to die.

Hey guys since the topic is still fresh, I have the Ryzen 5 2600 in the mail on its way & just happened to get a MSI Armor RX 580 locally for $100 (its a 4gb & they guy also had an 8gb, but wanted $40 extra for that one). Overall, definitely not complaining about getting this 580 since its a huge upgrade from my current gtx 670. Now I need to look into AM4 mobos. Bare in mind that my price limit on these is $100 & I have been looking at them already, but in all honesty im a little disappointed with the selection. All the flashy ones seem to be at $150+. I did see one ASRock mobo for around $100 that seemed ok as it took care of all the basic stats, but the memory area does worry me a little. Apparently I have to do what I did with my current setup, which is buy 2 sets of memory as that's cheaper than getting a 4 set pack (on avg the 2 pack is around $30-40 less). Im gonna stay with the same amount of memory as I really dont see a need to go above 16gb (at least for now).

Do you need any particularly flashy features for your mobo? Are you planning any overclocking?

I went with an ASROCK B450M Pro4 on my build because I wanted an matx build for a smaller case. Been happy with its simplicity and still had everything I needed.

Man I have been highly considering it for the past like 2 weeks about building my tower using AMD. They are much cheaper than Intel and in terms of efficiency they sound pretty neat. I am going to be changing to AMD soon. Only time will tell I guess.
