New folks (that probably bought the game for 5 bucks on a Steam sale) usually start as recon. Sometimes they don't know about the things we take for granted...like motion sensors and spotting.

I've had my keyboard mapped the same way since Descent II so I had to look up what some of the key settings are. Remember that you can completely customise every weapon and gadget key.

The one that most new snipers miss, and the most important one in my opinion, is the motion sensor. It's "Gadget 2". You throw it like a grenade.
In-game its default key is "4" but I've mapped it to "V". I would recommend remapping it to an easier key to use.

Ideally recons will spot the enemy a LOT. To spot, look at the enemy and press the Q key.
Spotting is under "issue order/communicate/spot" in settings and its default is "Q".

Mortars are "Gadget 1"
When using mortars you are close enough to spot, and be spotted.
Mortars give away your position. Imagine they come from a place directly over your head. Anyone watching will know basically where you are...they can see the direction they come from and how close you are from how steep the angle is...and that you're within spotting range. Move or hide as the mortars fall.

Snipers don't stay spotted as long as regular troops. If you find that a lot of people are shooting at you, you've been spotted. Move, or hide for 15 seconds until the spot goes away.

Snipers aren't popular...usually because there's so many of them and so many of them don't spot or use motion sensors. You'll need ammo (especially if you use motion sensors) so spot a lot, use motion sensors to help keep your teammates safe - not just to protect yourself - and the ammo will find it's way to you.

When you do need ammo, the way to ask for it is the same way you spot the enemy...except you spot an assault player on your team.

That's all I got.

Addendum welcome. :)
