Hello all,
If you don't know, I have a character in the server known as 'Amber Champagne'. She is a Public Defender, maybe you have heard or met with her. Anyway, I think there is a lot of mystery surrounding what it is we do day-to-day, so here's a little behind the scenes to maybe spark some interest in a job as a public defender in the DOJ.
We mainly serve 4 key roles:
1. Legal advise
-This basically just consists of legal advise being given. Counseling people on what is and is not legal and counseling people on whether or not something is worth going to court over.
2. Sentence reductions
-This service entails going to the local police departments upon a clients arrest and determining the legitimacy of the charges being brought against them. This is the part where you really get to get your hands dirty. You have to determine exactly what they are being charged with and the time/fine associated with those charges. You make sure the description of the charges match the crime appropriately, you make sure all police protocols are followed correctly, and you negotiate sentencing and fining accordingly.
3. Civil torts
-These are non-criminal cases, usually involving some sort of negligence resulting in a requested compensation to be granted in court. These can also include divorces, child possession, object possession, and a lot more. As with all cases that go to court, these require a lot of time both IC and OOC to determine every little fact that might help you win your case!
4. Criminal defense
-This is a criminal trial. Assuming there was no public defender available at the time of arrest, if a person believes their charges to be unfair, they can chose to postpone their sentencing and request a lawyer to fight those charges in court at a later set date. As with all cases that go to court, these require a lot of time both IC and OOC to determine every little fact that might help you win your case!
General information:
We as public defenders are not required to take any case forcefully. If you believe their case is weak, or if your client is being immature and disrespectful, you are not required to represent them. Respect is important in this role especially. In the role of public defender, you receive a paycheck from the state of $1000. On top of this you can charge a client up to $50,000 depending on the time and effort you will need to put into it. There are higher roles within the DOJ as well if you aspire to be more then a public defender! With the right amount of experience, reputation, and money you can become a private lawyer! Private lawyers would most likely take a specialty, such as, but not limited to some form of criminal or civil cases. They receive $1200 from the state and can charge up to 100k per case. If this still is not enough for you, and you are very ambitious, you could potentially become a prosecutor, ADA, or even the DA! These roles would be given to someone who has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community and would be chosen by the leadership within the DOJ as needed.
