Since I and many others like to shit post from time to time,

I think eGO forums should add a shit posting section, where we can all just spam stuff and shit post, and then You can make a rule saying "Posts Regarding spam, or immature content is against the rules in all categories except the "shitpost/spam/whatever u guys call it category.".

this is my opinion, Thanks for your time!!!

As someone who has watched the median age here nosedive and maturity with it, and had to deal with a ton of it as leadership, I'm well aware.
i think the majority of us are all aware at this point.

The forums have a dreadful number of useless posts as is.

There's no reason to promote this kind of posting and behaviour. It makes us look like a joke when people visit the site.

Like I said on your other post, you should try to actually contribute good discussions to forums.
dude this is a punk-free gaming community that's the difference! we are not any other gaming community, we are edgegamers :)

hey!

i make high quality shitposts, this is slander. ill be in touch with my lawyer

I do believe though that it is getting out of hand. Some posts are just garbage and don't have business being viewed. However, I don't necessarily believe that general chatter and gaming (where all the shitposts live in) should be moderated 24/7. If you're going to make a joke post, make it high quality. I think Maruchan Maruchan understands where I am coming from with that statement, DS Room Transparency, my favorite forum post ever.
see my boy kuantum gets it, like if someone makes a bad shitpost just move on, dislike it maybe lol

I think posts like the one last night the OP of this thread made literally just saying "I need to take a shit" should just be straight deleted. We don't need to go through stuff with a fine tooth comb or anything.

Use of forums depends person to person, but if someone wanted to see what our community is like and saw this, it would be pretty rough looking. Hell, it makes me not want to come to the forums when half the posts are a thread title and the body just says "lol" and the only replies are emojis.

We used to be able to hide lots behind the face that the site had the front page, server listings, etc, before you got to the forums. Now your current first impression is what you see right now.
sometimes people just need to take a shit man, we're an open community we're always here to talk about stuff w the bros Space Space even if you just need to take a shit bc not everyone finds that kind of support irl

IMHO, rather than manager+ handling forum moderation, why not make it a thing for Media? I mean it makes sense, Media's mission is to put forward the best optics possible and show off the community. It would allow them to create a position for forum mods and etc, so long as ur a G+
ok but how is conformity our best optic possible? like doesn't that contradict media's focus on punk-free creavitity?

As someone who has watched the median age here nosedive and maturity with it, and had to deal with a ton of it as leadership, I'm well aware.
in the end, we're just a bunch of gamers trynna have fun, like yeah we game, but we also edge game and that is what makes us special.

as for the suggestion. i'd be open to a dedicated forum but not one titled "shitposting" nor a rule that we must shitpost there

that's the thing. it is all permission based. in order to have the forum moderation power, there would be a lot more access given. that's where the too much power comes into play. it wouldn't just be the ability to moderate forum posts.

This, for a fact, I know is false(the bold part), I have PERSONALLY worked and developed Xen for major communities. You can restrict perms rather well, And if you wanted to you can for sure make it work.
If anyone's familiar with Revival in GMod, I built theirs and helped with Nomad's before.

As for the entrusting G's and O's, you can 100000% give less or more perms, and follow it up with training, and punishments if need be.
It wouldn't be that much extra in terms of moderation anyways, just the simple rules that are community-wide anyways. Anything bigger would be handled by Manager+ within media.

Further, as Simon has stated; there is a need for further moderation within the forums. You basically have a few choices on how to solve this, and I merely suggested one method. I strongly advise that you take some more thought and figure out eGO's methodology for the problem. EVERY community out there is at some point tested. That's just the facts.
An example I will very briefly point out was 2FA. That VERY QUICKLY got fixed.

What's gonna happen;
Or the community could just make a conscious effort to not act like 10 year olds.
Or
literally just saying "I need to take a shit"

Very clearly it's unreasonable to assume you can get the entire community to behave, And while Managers+ should suffice to handle the job, at the moment, We need something more; something better. So I gotta ask; What's the solution?

Idk punish users who make posts like that (including me ._.) and just talk with the other managers in maybe making a whole new "admin" role but they're just admins for the forums.

There are already like 60 people (Manager+) who have the ability to moderate the forums. I don't think you need more than that to handle the amount of posts per day on this site and start getting others to moderate it.

As for this part:

Maybe management needs to actually talk to the people who are regularly "shit posting" and let them know it's unneeded, instead of just letting the forums sit and burn. It takes 1 minute to see this regularly happening and write a PM saying "hey, knock it off".

We just had 2 managers say they didn't want to do it, not exactly sure if other managers want to contribute to the help of cleaning the site up but if a lot of managers don't want to do the job, then I don't see forcing them to be a great option.

I don't think this is needed as well. Mainly because this isn't an issue. I get this is a mature community, I get that, but it's not like general chatter exactly is the Mecca of intelligent conversation, especially considering that it wasn't ever really meant for based discussion. If you wanted an actual discussion about a topic, I certainly wouldn't put it in general chatter if it was an actual serious discussion. This is the same thing in the Discord. In general gaming, if you scroll up, it's just :mikestare: like 20 times.

If out of the 50-60 or whatever number, no one can take some turns looking after things, sounds like everyone's checked out, which I'd hope isn't the case. It's not asking a lot to share the load. It's not a high traffic site. This isn't an end of the world issue, it's just something that pushes people away from the forums.

I get this is a mature community,

We lost that status some time ago.

Simon, I am confused about your position here; In this same post, your statements imply you think things could be better in forum moderation.
Again, in the same post, you say things that imply the inverse.

Can you clarify? Do you think there needs to be some form of change in Forum Moderation? If so, if you feel like it state your reasoning?
Or even if you don't have a position on the discussion, say so? It's too confusing at this point to follow.

i have no problem moderating. i never said i didn’t want to do it. i said it gets tiresome, especially when it’s the same people who are making the threads over and over.

Huge no,as many have said; it gives us a bad image when new players come to the website and see we have a shitpost section.

Like Simon Simon said, We should be going towards good post and discussions. Sure a GOOD shit post is funny once in a while but if i have to for example keep commenting on my "photo from my trip" for people to see it because its just getting burried under the endless useless post, then its hard not just my post, but other great discussion post made by other users to get seen

I dont know if it would work, but some suggestions
- If a post has mostly dislikes then likes then the post gets auto deleted
-restrictions to certain sections on the forums, until they get a certain rep for commenting in certain posts getting involved in good discussion (similar to restriction you can have on subreddits)
-Start giving out warnings to people (which will have concequences;like eventually leading to being forum banned from certain sections)

i dont know just throwing out ideas

I completely agree with this, but I also don’t blame leadership. Using a completely new website with very limited reasons for any of us to check the forums. Personally I would get on the forums just to look threw random stuff such as awards, awards that were given out and just general random things. Another killer for me is not having a easily accessible recent posts, I would always refresh the forums just to check that and see what new posts were made on the forums. I know we have something similar it just doesn’t feel the same for me at all.

Another thing that’s pretty minor for me is your forum reputation, which the current system is cool just not nearly as incentivizing to make posts on the forums for me.

Pretty easy to check for new posts.

I get that, I really do (that post was garbage and should be deleted), but what I'm saying is that people rarely find the forums on their own, and even when they do, odds of them caring about the number of shitposts in a general subforum is just low at best.

What I really liked about the old forums is the downvote system where if you made a post and a lot of people didn't like it and downvoted it (for better or for worse), the post was blocked by a message of "This message has received a lot of downvotes, do you want to view it?". I guess we could use the report button, but I don't know who receives those.

All of the managers+ receive the reports. Exactly like the old forums.

I respect you, mostly because you are a pretty cool dude and your record is pretty incredible.

But I've been half/half part of eGO since around 2009-2010, only officially rejoining last year, and to me it seems like the frustrations you are expressing are a problem of general gaming as a whole, not just eGO. The average age of gamers has changed significantly in the past decade, as the barrier of entry gets lower and lower and parents who grew up playing games teach their kids to do so as well.

Does that excuse the excessive shitposting? Not really, it's more of a problem of, these days, people aren't exactly as interested in long term discussion over forums, as much as they used to be. I remember a time where you'd post a thread in TF about Dustbowl or CSS about jail and the members would come out of the wood works and talk about it for days. I remember that across many different games, communities. But as the general age of gamers dwindled, so did their attention spans.

I think a Fast Threads section that doesn't appear in What's New is probably the best option to curtail this kind of behavior in areas where serious discussion is meant to be had. Because I am one of those people who absolutely enjoys shitposting, because it can sometimes yield some quality content that gives people laughs for days, restricting other people's fun because some people don't like it, and it harms absolutely nobody, is kind of excessive.

This isn't necessarily true, XF allows you to configure 95% of forums and features down to the group. It's a very possible thing, but I think it would be more of an AT area, our admins that we absolutely trust 100% are our AT's, we trust them to train our admins and keep them straight, it only makes sense that they would be the ones given expanded administration privileges. It might have been true with VB, which I've never used at the admin level, but I've had full control over XF2 and XF1 forums and set them up myself, while XF2 isn't something I have had hundreds of hours of experience with like XF1, their frameworks are pretty much identical on the front end when it comes to groups, except all of the crap that was tedious was taken out, which is great.

People griped about the "difference between G and O" during the whole ban perms fiasco, so why not give O's who are AT's of their divisions the option to get trained as a limited forum moderator?
