This is all coming from a perspective of someone who plays 99.9% surf
TLDR; The community was a small(ish)group of loyal fans that was very unique for the time period; it felt like the bar from cheers
I came onto the surf a few months before the merge, and I remember meeting heidi and damon, as saiko and cherry bomb (thats a rare sight!) and i remember when the merge happened a lot of people were pretty upset, and from an outside perspective it would seem kinda weird, because a lot of people didn't like the
much needed updates and improvements, but I think a lot of the pG identity came from the very unique, if a little (very) buggy, plugins. I believe the surf timer was homebrew, and it was really more of a bhop timer, it didn't even show your speed! it showed your strafe percentage (personally i really miss that feature, it was so unique and tbh its what kept me playing on the server lol)
But besides the growing pains from the merge, i remember the community being very unique. I of course tried out a lot servers before I landed on pg/ego and none of them were very cool compared to pg. I used to play on this bhop server before i moved to surf, and it was a really cool VERY unique server that was the only place that had a good
nontoxic community of loyal players, and thats what really stuck with me about pg, was that every time i got on there was the same set of people and they were all fun and it wasn't ever boring or irritating. I really have to thank
heidi
and
Damon
because they were always on keeping it as awesome as it could be, and they've had the biggest impact on what i think about ego, and they are the reason i got on the forums in the first place. (Ps heidi ILY! )
When the merge happened a lot of pg people left the community, and with the transition between old vs. new surf (youd know what i meant if you were around through it all ) there was a lot of time resets and surf timer changes and maps doing this and that ( which is to be expected, the old system was REALLY hecked). I also remember custom stats used to actually use his mic back then lol. But anyway that in between stage (that really only changed around the beginning of 2020, 2019 was kinda a lawless wasteland) Was really weird and i kinda quit surf for a while, not neccesarily because of that but because it was kinda lame and broken all the time, and none of the older players would come on anymore, and that combined with life made me stop doing so much stuff online, because all i did was surf really. It took a while for the server to find its identity again, and it felt more like one of those servers youd go on because it just happened to have the map you were looking for.
But now i think its every bit as good as what it was back then. Every server will go through changes, its inevitable, but i think eGO has finally found its place and we're getting the server filled basically 24/7 (there were times when i was the ONLY one in the server at 3 in the afternoon on a saturday in the summer) and a lot of those people are names i recognize. I've spent about 300 (out of 1200) hours on the pg/ego surf which really doesnt seem like all that much now that i see it in numbers but to me it feels like home for a million years. When i get on the server i am greeted with the same "Hey platypus!" i was greeted with so many times long ago (which is a great feeling). There is the same nostaligia, though, for simpler times, with admitedly less annoying kids getting on saying things they're way too young to know about.
So yeah from a kid who only played surf id say it was a fun casual joint that you could get on after a long day of whatever you had going on, and know you would have a good time. It's very much like that now and im glad to say it.
