Heavy load video crashes

As always, wholehearted thanks in advance. I've always come here for help with my gear and never have you guys failed to assist.

Here are my specs

Aorus X470 Motherboard
AMD 9 3900X CPU
EVGA RTX 2080 Super GPU
4x8 Corsair DDR4 Vengance Pro 3200mhz RAM
Samsung 4K monitor with a second one BenQ
Stuff here and there.


I bought these components last december and I've been enjoying amazing gaming experience.

This past saturday out of nowhere while I was playing X4: Foundations in all ultra when the video crashed. Even though the audio of the game kept going, all video was frozen on both screens and then they shut off and that was what.

From that point on, everytime I load a heavy game, like Control, X4, Borderlands 3 and so on the video crashes massively. Sometimes the screen goes dark, sometimes the screen goes nuts. See video and images attached.





This only happens with heavy video load. If I'm playing, say, Among us, Hades, watching Youtube, Netflix or working, I have no problems at all. Temperature is no issue either, since my CPU has a CoolerMaster Masterair MA620M and the GPU is a hybrid; I've never had more than 65°C even demanding everything from the PC.

What is going on with my gear? I read somewhere that perhaps it could be an issue with the RAMs so I started a Windows Memory Diagnostics: the system restarted and started the diagnosys but after 21% it froze for several hours and did not actually completed it.

I never get a BSOD so I have no code or anything that the system could tell me about the problem.

Are you using an up to date version of DirectX? Faulty hard drive sectors can also be a source of crashes when playing demanding games. Otherwise, try reinstalling windows with a full system recovery.

looks like your graphics card is dying, if you only got it in december you might be able to warranty it still.

Try a better HDMI cable as some cables either wear out, or are just can't handle better graphics.

I’m suing the DisplayPort included with the Gpu so that should not be the problem. Imma try to reinstall windows. Thanks for your time, m8

I thought of that but failure only when heavy load seems more like a process problem, not a video problem. Imma explore this option too, with an old gpu and see where it tickles. Thanks for your time!

Artifacts like that are normally a sign of a dying GPU. Have you been putting any extreme overclocks on it?

Yeah, this looks like a dying GPU. As mentioned, if you only got the card in December, this should fall under warranty... You would need to test it with another GPU first, otherwise you'd have to get a tech guy to diagnose it and that's not just a couple dollars. They like to gouge people for diagnostic tests.

I also had this same problem before I got some new parts. "Would load up black desert online and BOOM black screen"

The First possibility is having a dying graphics card, This, as I think, is unlucky due to you have a newer graphics card could be the problem but can't be 100% sure

The Second possibility could be that your Power supply is unable to power your graphics card full load, as you would expect, the more performance needed from the graphics card, the more power it will need, and if it doesn't get the power it needs it will go into a "safe mode" and completely shut itself off.

The Last Possibility I could think of would be that your graphics card is overheating, like I mentioned before when the graphic card detects that there is something wrong and could cause harm to itself it will into a "safe mode" will it will shut it off for the user to correct the problem. Check your temps through the software of your PC while you under load to see if it's this.

*Note for me I got a new power supply and cooling in my rig and I use the same graphics card and I haven't gotten a single black screen since*

Thanks a lot. I'll check the power supply issue because the PC is connected to a regulator which is connected to a wall socket that has an A/A connected as well, and I've seen my 2nd screen blink when the A/A is in full, so I'll change where I plug the PC and check for problems.

Yeah, I actually totally forgot about this possibility because I'm very vigilant on making sure I have the best PSU for the PCs I build but power could 100% be the culprit! That's actually the easiest/cheapest thing you can look into. There are websites out there that you can plug in all the specs of your computer and it will tell you the exact wattage your PSU needs. As always, never cheap out on PSU; always buy the best quality PSU with the correct watts. Too much isn't good either.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have a Corsair Hx1200i Platinum so that shouldn’t be a problem either, but perhaps the A/A is actually messing with the supply...
