Hey all, looking for ideas to try and figure out what possibly caused my moms laptop to not want to power up. First thing I thought of was the hard drive (obvious) and had a order a few tools to start diagnosing that & good news is that my desktop (Win 7) is able to read her hd (Win 10). Because its a typical hd, its gonna take a while to read it (even using usb 3.0 adapter). With that said, im open to other ideas on what to look into. To help clear up the understanding of the mobo, hd is set on the right side (where the laptop was dropped, hence where I started my focus), battery is located in middle & cpu is on upper left corner. Its a rather newer HP where I have to use keyboard layout to pry it up to get inside (unlike the good old days). This is my first time working on a decent laptop, so im open to suggestions.

Hey Simon, so right now I have the hard drive in my desktop, so once I finish the scan then ill put it back in the laptop to see what happens. Bare in mind that this process will take a while on a 500gb hd, so as soon as I put it back in & try to power it up, ill let you know.
Ok so hard drive is back in, but it will not power on at all. From what im noticing is that theres something else broke or its in a stuck pre post loop. I mean it definitely wont even post for sure. Thankfully the hard drive is still usable, along with the li-ion battery & the a/c charger, but that seems to be about it.

If you aren't passing POST, and cannot see any clear/obvious damage physically on the dropped hardware... I think it's past any "quick" fix. You said it was relatively new... maybe there's still some warranty with a little wiggle room for repair.

Yeah, sounds like a motherboard issue. If it was a hdd issue it would be posting, but the bios would be giving you an error that there's no bootable medium. If it's still not posting with the power cable in it's not the battery. Most likely some solder points were broke when it was dropped. Which is not a quick fix

Does it has a removal battery or internal. Sometimes with internal batteries you need to unhook the battery and then hold the power button for 15-30 seconds so it can drain the EC. My old MSI laptop had the power issue and thats what i had to do in order for it to start taking a charge again. Otherwise it could very well be the power brick that is causing issues so if you have another power supply try swapping them and see what happens! outside of those simplistic fixes mb the EC battery (button style) may have come loose in its mounting bracket and needs to be reseated, but id try unhooking the battery and seeing if it will power on with the AC port plugged in first!

AC should bypass battery in almost all cases as they plan on something like that happening. The laptop was dropped and the AC connector was not plugged in, so it can't be that. It's an internal issue. Ram could be the issue here but more likely than not it's just an issue with a solder joint on the board itself. That seems to be the general issues with failing to boot. However, the hdd is still functional. Perhaps try plugging in an external display, the display could be busted. You could try different ram sticks too
