So I have a Dell Wireless 1370 WLAN Mini-PCI Card. I am one floor right below my router and I am getting a 54mbs signal.
On vent and in game, I keep getting ping spikes, going from 31 (the average ping I got before the problems) into the hundreds. I can access the internet fine, but the ping spikes make it impossible to play games.
What can I do??

hmmmm, did you try calling your internet service provider? it could be a problem coming from their lines and not yours, thats what happened to me because they were fixing and upgrading. and i really try not to use a wireless :)

Just wondering is your computer lagging up or is it just the internet?

I think this might be the work of a virus or some program eating up your internet speed.

Spyware and a virus is the best answer I can come up with.

It is hard to say what the problem is without more data...

The easy things to try are:

- Shut down any other programs that are running (esp. browsers, email clients, bittorrent/p2p clients, etc they transfer data sometimes even when you're not using them)
- Do a thorough virus and spyware scan
- Try the game on a different machine on the same network (ie, borrow a buddy's or install on your laptop, etc)

It might help to use something like wireshark to grab a capture of all the packets being transmitted on your home network and see if there is some other machine (or even some process on your machine) that is transmitting data and effecting your latency. (That can be tricky to do if you don't know how, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to step you through it without you having any experience...)

You can also use "net_graph 1" (or a higher number) in a steam-based game to see if it is a problem with your local machine or a server/net issue. If you have no network experience, this can also look like gibberish... but if you can capture a screenshot of the graph when you're experiencing a spike that might help.

Do you have a cable modem or DSL? Who is your provider? Some of the providers oversell their bandwidth at one level or another. Cable providers like to oversell how much data can be transmitted between each house and the head end. All providers sometimes oversell how much they can transmit between their local area and the internet at large. Not much you can do if that is the case. If you have control over the ISP decision, consider going with a local DSL provider vs. a big corporation for DSL or cable. The local shops tend to do better in a number of areas.

easiest way to test if its the wireless card thats causing the spikes is to plug directly into the router if you have a ethernet cable. I dont play on wireless either because i noticed my router gave me higher choke even though i had a full signal. Im only about 10 feet from my router, but theres about 6 other wireless routers around here and I run mine on a seperate channel from theirs. I also had high encryption set up on mine. WPA2 i think.

I do know signal strength can be killed depending on certain materials around you. Such as glass doors and metal boxes etc, or thick slabs of concrete. Its all trial and error I've noticed with my particular model but it is a rather old 54g router.

Well I tried a bunch of the stuff you guys recommended, and I dont know what I did, but its been playable for about a day now.
Thanks guys

That's good to hear, if you have more problem please tell us what network card you're using, system specs, and things like that.
