A lot of people have been asking this question lately: "What are dogs?" - so I figured I'd type up a brief explanation.
What are dogs?
To summarize: The dog (Canis familiaris when considered a distinct species or Canis lupus familiaris when considered a subspecies of the wolf) is a domesticated carnivore of the family Canidae. It is part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant terrestrial carnivore.
While this might appear true to common-folk, it is not.
Dogs are related to horses, see the image below:

1) Similar eyes
2) Love
3) Both have a big beak with their nose and mouth attached to the beak.
Now that you've learned how dogs and horses are directly related we can continue on to what other names are suitable for dogs.
1) Dog - standard name for dog
