PS3 connect to VGA?

So, I'm thinking about getting a PS3 today, but I don't have an HDTV (yet). What I do have is a 21" Trinitron CRT lying around unused, so I'm wondering if I could use it as a monitor for the PS3. This is what I'm thinking:

HDMI to DVI cable > DVI Gender changer > DVI to VGA adapter > VGA cable to monitor

Any idea if that will work? Anybody ever tried this? Any idea if it will look like crap? Any other ideas?

I'd have to buy the HDMI to DVI cable and the gender changer, so I'm trying to avoid buying them if this crazy setup won't work. I do have my old PS2 adapter cable, so I can always play in standard def, but I would much rather play in a higher resolution.

This wouldn't look that good. I have a ps3, ill take a couple pics of the back for you, and you can see what will fit the best. I use a 50" HD LCD TV for my ps3, but it does have S-Video cables, if you have S-Video on your CRT? Tell me if you want me to take some pics, via pm or a reply.

In general, the more odd adapters you have to use, the worse it is going to look. I can't speak to this configuration personally, though.

Yeah, I am worried about adapter hell, but it might be worth a try. Who knows, maybe I'll check my mail today and my stimulus check will be there and I will just break down and buy an HDTV while I'm at it.

It seems like if you go HDMI -> DVI you'll lose blu-ray playback, I would think... but I don't know if that matters to you or not. If you can get the adapters on the cheap you might as well try it...

edit: also, HDMI carries audio, so do you have a plan for getting sound?

I don't have an HDCP compliant TV anyway, so blu-ray is a non-issue for me. As far as sound, I still have my PS2 cables, as well as extra optical audio cables lying around. I'm good on sound.

In the end, I went ahead and bought an HDMI -> DVI cable so I can hook it up to one of my LCD monitors currently hooked up to my PC. I would still love to find a way to use this 21" CRT sitting on the floor beside me, but for now I think I can manage with a 22" LCD.

It's going to look great on a 22" LCD. I've used my PS3 on my 22" Widescreen LCD and it looks great. But I don't think the setup of HDM to DVI to VGA will work because HDMI and DVI and digital, where VGA is analog. I tried that setup before and it didn't work. You could buy and adaptor but it's going to cost a lot of money and I don't believe that it's worth it. So unless your 21" CRT has DVI, I don't think it's worth the hassle to use a PS3 on it.
