I know disk defragment speeds your pc a lot (from what i heard) but i also heard the one that comes with Windows isn't as good, so I wanted to ask, what defrag took should i get? i heard a lot about diskeeper premier and perfectdisk pro. no worries about price since ill torrent/warez them anyway :P

I read in a magazine about windows that the Windows Defrag benchmarked the best out of 6 that they tested.

If you have money, get Perfectdisk Pro. It's the best non-free software.

If you need a simple defrag, I've had good experiences with Auslogics Disk Defrag.

<removed>. so perfectdisk > diskeeper/windows defrag?

p.s. why are these programs better than the one that windows gives? I don't mind how long windows defrag takes because im running it overnight.

me personally i would just use windows defrag lol... seems to do that job for me

I don't think defragmenting is as important as it used to be. You can try it if you like, but don't expect any major performance improvements. I'd recommend pagedefrag for defragmenting system files. You can get it free from Microsoft these days (previously Sysinternals).

For steam games, there is a defragmentation utility embedded in steam. Right click on a game and choose properties. Then choose the local files tab. It will tell you what percent the game files are fragmented. You can defragment by pushing the 'Defragment Cache Files' button.

lol opps, i can edit that out if u want.

i think ill just use the windows one coz it seems a lot easier and 'i wont be breaking the law' ;)

most recent tests have shown that:

1) Windows Defrag works just as well as most other defrag programs

2) Defragging your hard drives shows no significant performance increase.

In fact, in the last study I read, defragging actually slowed down the test machine across the board! A lot of this has to do with the newer disk technologies and the fact that average file sizes have increased so much.

All of that to say - most likely spending money on a defrag program will be a waste. I would suggest using Windows built in program, or trying out AusLogics Disk Defragmenter.

trykael is correct, when windows 95/98 were around and hard drives were small and the file system pretty much sucked. Fragmentation actually slowed down your computer. Right now what's probably slowing down your computer can be cleaned up with anti-virus, ccleaner, and only running the programs you need.

To change what starts with your computer
(start -> run -> msconfig -> startup tab)
I disable everything except for AVG, and my ftp server.

EDIT: If you've ever reinstalled windows and thought your computer was faster, there's a good chance that all you did was remove crap that could have been removed without reformat.

yeah, i removed all the stuff from startup on msconfig (except my nod32 AV) and also disabled/or changed to manual some services coz vista has a ridiculous amount of useless services that i'll never use and they like to startup automatically for some odd reason.
