Enginner noob?

lvl 1 sentries easy as hell to run around and blow up as any class. But sometimes you are using a clas stht cant destroy the sentry under the conditions eg a demo might not be able to get in shooting distance for his stickies on the enemy dispenser even if he is supposed t be a demolitions 'expert'

Man engies are going to kill when achievement comes out, loads of pyros and no spies bliss :), maybe i will finally gt my 10 kills with sentry

Wow! you dont have 10 kills?

My max is 29 SG kills

OMG! myne is 41!

dont...mock...the prince of evilness...!!!

i dont play engineer much anywho, dont like building sentries and makin sur ethey still alive all the time. Prefer to just go in there backstab headshot and burn enemies away.

It's part of the game, just like a noob cannon someone uses. People complain, but if it's part of the game get over it. The sentry can be taken out many different ways. A player using aimbot is a lot tougher. The sentry uses an aimbot to detect players, but valve put it in, it's fine the way it is!! That's my two cents.

Engineer has the lowest skill ceilling in game, let's be honest.

However...tactical awareness and coordination with teammates is what differs a bad Engie from good Engie. Good Engies are valuable teamplayers. So it's all cool.

btw Huskies, I agree with you on plenty of what you said for 1,2 and 4. I was only being brief. Didn't want to write a novel :p

1. Of course. I'm not sticking around a sentry that has 20 stickies around it. I'm leaving and prepared to build another if I can.

2. Note how I said "good location", not "common chokepoint". If it works somewhere, keep it up until threatened. If it doesn't work, find somewhere else. Simple as that :p

4. Patrol around the area means within field of vision of your sentry. It is unwise to run to a place where you are out of sap-uber distance unless you are moving the sentry. I do it anyway because I find sitting there boring at times and want to bust someone in the head with a wrench from time to time.

just to add to the great comments already posted here...

playing engineer doesn't make you a noob; however...

i have noticed that a lot of fresh players choose to play engineer at first. maybe the non-direct combatant role affords them the oppurtinity to observe the action while they are learning? idk, but a good engineer is a great asset to any team...

The engineer's skills are very different from the skills of any of the other classes. It is true that the sentry is an aimbot, so the engy requires so little of the aiming skills required by the scout or sniper. His skills mostly involve quick positioning of buildings in places where every inch counts, and combinations for dealing with attacks from enemies (for example, if a demoman is attacking with a combination of stickybombs and grenades, then the defense skills requred involve which buildings to wrench, when to wrench them, when to pull out the shotgun to shoot stickies away, etc.)

That said, I do however maintain that the engy does in fact require less skill than what is required by the scout, soldier, pyro, medic, sniper, or spy, but probably more than required by demoman or heavy. But Engineer is by no means a complete no-skill position like Heavy.

Indeed, people who complain about engineers and their sentries must not have played them enough to understand that even if the sentry is an "aimbot", they are not invincible, it all depends on where you put them. Those trolls have no perception of how to use sentries, so they automatically assume that if you play engineer enough to know where to place your sentry, you are a noob/hacker. My friend the Heavy sums it up best: Cry some more.

As a soldier/heavy/demo player I have the utmost respect for engi's with real skill. You can always tell the good ones because they will stay behind the sentry and repair away but will bail out in time to get away while sacrificing their sentry.

The good ones will also wrench the crap out of you if you get close to em ehheeh damn spys :)

Some of the most impenetrable defenses were with engi's that doubled up behind a sentry and as a pretty decent player I will tell you they are a tough nut to crack.

But the main weakness for that mechanical sentry is its ability to follow and lock onto only one single target. A good medic worth his salt will always run in front of you while ubering to break the sentry's lock on you allowing ya to get in close enough to do serious damage.

I do not think engi is a noob class at all though, they are but a tiny cog in the huge machine we like to call a team :)

Oh and as one of those no skill having heavy player types halogen, Ill remember that when we meet on the battlefield.

complete no-skill position like Heavy.

200 hours as Heavy here and I say this is nonsense. In fact, Heavy does require much, MUCH more skill to play than Engineer, especially if you're doing runs with your Medic against a decent team.

Let's also not forget the offensive engies. Rare and tricky a role as it might be, when combined with a well coordinated assault, they can add some serious firepower to the frontlines.

Take Turbine for instance. This map lends itself really well toward one team being able to own the center area completely. A couple days back, there were 4 engies on BLU, and we had the center area completely dominated. One full setup on each crate, one up on the ledge watching the vent exit, and one on the floor somewhere, I don't quite remember exactly where. It was basically like we had the center as our spawn room, with all the teleporters and dispensers about.

This also brings up another point. You can tell a new engie from an experienced one by how they work as a team. I myself learn maps well enough to know the best spot(s) for my setup, as well as all the other typical locations that others might set up in. I'll often build my stuff, and if it doesn't look like I'm going to be getting much action, I'll take off and assist other engies. Many times I've come across a gun taking fire with its owner nowhere in sight, and many times I've earned a satisfying thanks from said owner...not always directed at me by name, as sometimes it's impossible to know exactly who was helping your endangered gun, but I know who I am when it comes over voice or team chat.

Engie is turning into my favorite class lately. It really fits my more defensive play style. I don't play it because it requires less skill than other classes. On the contrary, really. Engie has a lot of potential, provided one is willing to take the time to learn the map to find the best spots, and always be ready to adapt to changing situations in the game. If that intel gets dropped halfway through our base, there's no doubt that I'm either moving my setup to defend it or helping those that already are. Engie requires no less skill than other classes. It's just a different kind of skill. Sniper requires those crazy twitch reflexes to be good. Scout requires precise aim and constant strafing and dodging to be good. Each class has its own type of skill required, and the engineer is no exception.

tl;dr version: Skill is relative. It's like saying a car mechanic requires more skill than a computer technician. They're two distinctly different types of skill.

This is kind of what I've been thinking the whole time. Apples and oranges, I do this, you do that, they're not the same thing. There are times when an engineer is just useless; on a CP map, when your team is on defense and your back is against the wall, the enemy team usually won't give you enough time to set up a level 3 sentry and dispenser before sending a pyro or heavy in to harass you and blow them up. But I know I've placed a sentry in a new/unexpected location and gotten a multitude of kills from it just catching a charging offense unaware.

Also, everyone should make sure not to confuse "skill" with "necessity" or "utility." Even if you think engineer doesn't require much skill, or if you do, that's totally separate from how useful they are and whether or not your team needs one.

The second we start the whole "This doesn't take any skill." debate is the second we get people picking a favorite class and starting flame wars.

Also the "tl;dr version" thing was sweet, Adilor, I have to start doing that to my long posts.
