Vista Ultimate...

Hello!
I'd like to ask your opinion. I recently bought Windows Vista Ultimate, complete edition, but the big question is: Do I install it or should I wait?

Need details i.e. do you have a 64 bit processor, how old is the overall system for driver issues. I have had Vista since beta and have never had a problem so the install question depends on the drivers.

Yep what officer said. All depends on your specs. If your asking to install it just for the fact that you are afraid its not stable or something I would go for it. Vista is starting to get alot better.

go on the microsoft site and dl this program to see if ur system is compatible with vista, srry i forgot what its called

Yeah, remember that vista basic needs about 512-1024mb of ram just to run unlaggy, premium needs about 1024mb and ultimate needs about 1024-1536mb. the XP just needs about 256mb ram. i wouldn't suggest changing it now, unless you've got a powerful PC. Don't realy know what cpu you'll need. Vista is more userfriendly after you get used to it but if you wanna be gaming at full capacity, then w8 untill you get better stuff!

Ok, I have a Core2Quad Q6600 processor, 2 GB DDR2 6400 RAM, Asus Maximus Formula Motherboard, Radeon HD2600XT.

My PC is capable of running Vista Ultimate, but the biggest question is do I really need to upgrade to?

My opinion in this case is do you want 64 bit OS? The number of programs out there being developed for 64 bit is low so its not critical. If you do not care about 64bit then don't get ultimate. Keep in mind though that if you plan on using 4 GB or more of ram then you need 64 bit OS since 32bit can not do more than 4GB of memory addresses. Like I said before I have had 64 bit OS since beta and I can say that its solid so I deemed the price high but worth it in the long run especially if they ever start doing 64bit programs or DX10 games. Thanks for your quick respone Officer Friendly... Do you have any tips about installing it? Do I have to check for 64 bit drivers or are included in the disc? What else do I have to know?

The OS will come with the standard drivers but specific 64 bit drivers will have to come from the vendor, i.e. my soundblaster card did not include the drivers or instructions inside (not an issue for a true computer nerd but poor marketing) but I did find them online. If you run windows update you will find some 64 bit drivers for say video cards automatically. If you really want to be careful just look up the hardware such as printers before hand. I can say that my motherboard manufacture never came out with 64 bit support drivers but a quick check shows that Asus has them for your board.

Tonight I'll do a search run for all the drivers needed (64bit version). One more thing is it possible to have XP and Vista in the same HD, of course, in differente partitions? Do you recommend it?

Vista

Vista runs a different start up program which will allow you to run XP and Vista but I say keep them on different partitions especially since the drivers will be completely different but you can have them on the same hard drive and in reality I have XP, Vista and Vista beta on one hard drive so go for it.

Last night, I downloaded every 64-bit driver that my hardware needs. But I wasn't aware of something very important. Does source based games runs over Vista 64-bit? And what other other programs have 64-bit versions? (office, anti-virus, etc.)

office should work, i don't realy know if it has to be a "64-bit" version of it, i don't think so... but the source pbrly wont work... https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7422-RYFZ-0595 is the steam-support-site's answer, it says that only lost coast and HL2 will work, i doubt it but anyway... i'm running on a XP 32bit and a vista 32bit so i don't have 2 much knowledge about it...

Thanks Rabbit, I've been doing some research about this issue and it doesn't matter if you run 32-bit software over a 64-bit OS. It'll work.

Vista Ultimate is great in my opinion. But its more of a presonal preff.

Yea ultimate is awesome. I have Home Premium and have used ultimate and would have to say that ultimate is better.

its really better to buy a new computer with vista already installed on it because you will have no trouble. If you buy and install, you are really looking at hugy capability problems. vista sucks in certain ways

Well, I've finished upgrading to Vista Ultimate 64-bit version, and I can say that it's running smooth. To those that are having doubts about this OS, let me tell you, that if you have the hardware, the OS and time, go for it you won't be dissappointed. Thanks to everyone for your opinions and tips.
