Vista Ultimate...

Well, I've finished upgrading to Vista Ultimate 64-bit version, and I can say that it's running smooth. To those that are having doubts about this OS, let me tell you, that if you have the hardware, the OS and time, go for it you won't be dissappointed. Thanks to everyone for your opinions and tips.

NP, but does the 64bit version rly run dods and such games? i'm a little confused... PM me if you have an answer

If Microsoft is well known for anything it is backwards compatability. They strive to make it so that the current OS is able to handle anything the previous one could. I remember Source crashing in XP when I first tested it but Vista has run perfectly. I can not think of any 64bit software out there but Vista handles 32bit software fine. The only issue I know of is that some programs require some shorcut tweaks if you have over 4GB of Ram since there are some programs that tinker with Memory Addresses. Either way any game runs fun however I did run into a security software BS problem that took a service ticket to fix.

So far no problems with software... Source only 64-bit games are HL2, and HL2:Lost Coast, so far. But for the rest of the games, they are running smoothly, just some video adjusting. And as Officer said, Vista handles 32-bit so, again, if you can, do the upgrade.

Personally i reckon vista gets way to much stick. I reckon its a pretty decent OS and people are just hesitant to change. Its probably a good idea if you have a DirectX10 GPU as DX10 is only supported in vista and also if your a gamer as more games are being developed for vista alone and more will be in the future.

Summary: If you can support it... go for it!

Vista took a beating because the vendors did not develop drivers for older hardware despite the SDK being out. I for one am a victim of poor drivers with my motherboard but new computers run fine and the vendors are catching up with the 64bit demand.

::chuckle:: in the end Vista is a terrible OS...it's not QUITE as bad as ME, but it's close. Performance is well below XP, drivers are still an issue, and compatibility is terrible, which makes it very hard to upgrade in a business environment.

now, most OS'es have growing pains when they come out, and i realize that, but it's been over a year now, and we're still having major problems. i for one will stick with XP until Windows 7 shows up.

Well good luck on that since it won't be beta until 2010. The only major problems exist because vendors refuse to put any money into older hardware drivers so the customers suffer.

I had some problems with my vista, drivers and stuff but i thought that it would fix with the sp1... i didn't notise any difference exept that my drivers started to change and dods started to lagg a lot the first 3weeks...

Well Microsoft doesn't handle drivers other than absolute basic ones that only exist to determine hardware and allow you to locate the correct ones. SP1 is more of a stability patch that updated vulnabilities and kernal issues. Lag on games is hard to cut down but again that could be a drivers issue and like I said in the past most companies want you to buy new hardware so they won't update old drivers.

If you dont want vista then ubuntu all the way lol. No seriously i tihnk its great... its free and always supported and u can get anything to work on it.

Ok, now I have a question Officer, how did you cut the lag in games?

The power of your system is only as powerful as your weakest link. You can have a kickass video card, 16 GB of RAM, high powered CPU etc etc but you can get cut down by your internet connect or router. I went from 1 GB of ram to 2 GB and my BF2 lag was noticably lower so thats my first recomendation especially since the motherboard I am looking at will support 16 GB of RAM which means they will start producing new chips. Bascially I would make sure you have some good ram, a decent CPU, and video card. These will cut down your lag on the comptuer itself but your internet connection and distance from server are issues you can't deal with.

I have never tried ubuntu but I have heard of issues so I wouldn't say that everything works on it.

[Removed by Admin] Its a system hogg i have a 2gb ddr2 5400 stick of mem in my comp and i idle at using 41% of it. Its kinda touchy as well like installing the nvida drivers didnt work from the regular i had to unistal what vista updated and go to the site and redownload the right drivers for my 8600 gts ran in SLI. Also the sevurity is annoying it asks about everything you install and change. My other complaint is that i cant alt+Tab TF2 it wont let me back into the game if i do. Its a lot of pretty just not very practical. [Removed by Admin]

I'm not real sure you should be making offers like this on the website. Piracy is illegal, no matter how you feel about the company, and I for one think it's abhorrent to make that offer in a group like this.

One you are using a pirated version so I don't take your complaints seriously and of course new software uses more resources but that is the nature of the beast. Also trykael is right that you should not be sharing your pirated stuff.

You are right Officer, the problem is my internet connection but I can't do anything about this issue until the ISP offers more speed. Until then I can live with this.
