New mic

When I play on TF2, my mic has this weird thing where it is really loud (no matter what I do) and it's only static that comes through. When I try it on Win Xp settings, it just takes what I say and echoes it, faster and faster. I use headsets, so it isn't acoustic.

My question is, how do I fix this, or what brand and kind of mic should I buy?

What kind of Headset are you using now? Most people i've known have had no problem with even the 20$ logitechs from walmart or something, yeah it's not 5.1 surround in a headset but the sound works and so does the mic. I doubt your mic is the problem, unless it's <= 2-3 years old and the wires are falling apart on it. but that generally cuts the sound entirely.

My second question. What kind of sound card are you using? Using onboard sound? you may have a problem right there depending on the sound card. Not to say that you can't work with onboard sound, it's just that onboard sound is horrible for everyone.

And lastly, your drivers, are they up to date?

If you are using Vent and have the same key assigned to both then you may get what you are describing.

I provided a setup procedure in this thread a month or two ago. I would suggest at least looking at it. It may or may not help you. There is also a link to Steam that talks about advance microphone settings provided by someone toward the end of the thread.
