Laptop died, looking for new one.

So my laptop of over 5 years died and now am looking for a new one, anyone have some suggestions. I want one that will run newer games. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Best choice would be the MSI GF75 Thin 10UE-069 17.3" with a ram upgrade.
I would also suggest to wait for more people to respond, I'm more of a desktop person.

Better GPU, Better CPU, Double the storage, 240hz Screen, Its only 15.6 Inches though.

Unrelated, but holy shit.

I built my current PC for around 800 dollars and it plays every game I wanted it to play with no issues. Are laptops typically that expensive? For 1.7k, I could build one hell of a gaming PC.

Laptop builds are taxed heavily, if you're wanting bang for your buck then you have to build a PC. For this, I would recommend pcpartpicker or an equivalent. If you are deadset on a laptop, here is my suggestion: Gaming Laptop

This +1. Get the gs75 stealth but with the rtx 2080/2070 (I'm not sure what the 30 series versions are going for rn) with 1 tb of storage if u can find it. Since you'll mainly use it for travel it's a good choice. It's an ultra thin and looks incredibly sleek/professional. Also it should fit in most 17 inch laptop cases (ultra thin). MSI's cooler boost and dragon center is super helpful for managing temperatures and monitoring the status of your pc. I bought this as my secondary pc about a year ago for my on-the-go/college pc and it's been great. Maybe I'm biased but its a great laptop. Maybe the GF74 is a good choice too with more ram, but idk I'm a big fan of the stealth series. If fps is your main concern and you don't mind spending the extra money, then yeah the tuff seems like a good option. With laptops it's usually a compromise between portability or power. Anyways, just look at the benchmarks and reviews for them and see what you prefer.
