I just recently "re-made" my computer with a new mb and video card etc. and since then, my sound hasn't worked. It seems as if the system doesn't even know it's there and i know it's plugged in and all that. I need some help to figure out how to fix it. Also, it's an on-board audio.

Curiously enough, after turning my computer off with the switch, it would no load any video. After i took it apart put it back it started and showed video. Now my audio is gone too, though i am making progress.

Specifications meaning CPU, Memory, Sound card - on board, Video Card, Motherboard, PSU. Configuration meaning Windows XP, Vista, Ubuntu. It is better to have more information than needed, than to have less.
List your parts so we know what you are using. Did you check device manager for devices with question marks on them?
Then is it disabled in the Bios? Did you run out of resources because you have too many components and it is a resource conflict?

ok, well i have ddr2 800 mem. an intel dual core duo E2200 processor, a high-definiton on-board sound card i have an GeForce 8400 GS video card and a 7150 nvidia Geforce mb as for psu i have a cooler master and xp. There are no "?"'s but there are a couple "!"'s.

Does the BIOS recognize the sound card? There is usually a setting in the BIOS to switch between the onboard and the PCI sound, make sure that is set to the PCI.
Also, I once had a MOBO with a bad PCI slot. It wouldn't recognize anything I put in there, so I wound up having to use different slots. Try switching slots and see what happens.

Ding. This was my first thought, as well. The disc that came with your motherboard should have drivers for your motherboard's chipset as well as all integrated stuff, including onboard sound and ethernet.
Might be a good idea to post which those devices are. Give them a look, and at the bottom of the properties panel for that device it should tell you what the problem is. If it's a lack of drivers, then you should know what to do. If it's an IRQ conflict, post here with specifics (what kind of part, what slot it's in, etc., the actual error message). Hell, do that with any error you're seeing in there.

Any luck? Try uninstalling the old drivers that the system thinks you installed in the devices manager, then reinstalling. Also, if possible, download the drivers direct from the manufacturers website and use the one's you download, not the ones on the disk. I always have bad luck with drivers off of disks, for some unknown reason. Also, doing all that in safe mode may help.
Also, as I mentioned in steam, sometimes reloading directX helps. That cleared up some annoying stuttering problems for me!

Under device manager does it shows the sound device? If so, enter to properties and try to update driver...
Have you checked if under "Control Panel / Uninstall Programs" are the drivers installed?
