didn't know whether to post this in off topic or not but they are basically the same forum so idc

IS 2^2 NEGATIVE FOUR (-4) OR POSITIVE FOUR (4)

I was always taught positive four in school but apparently other people weren't and this blew my mind so I wanted to see how widespread this issue was

leave explanations in replies if you want but I don't care.

Honestly this is an argument between education systems..

In Europe / Denmark, at least to my knowledge, we are taught that 2^2 is another way of saying x (a given number, uplifted with y (another given number) its the same as saying x, y amount of times...

which means that 2^6 is a shortage for:
2*2*2*2*2*2

so 2^2 = 2*2 = 4

2 to the power of 2 is 4.( which is the only right answer) But, the square root of 4 can be 2 or -2

This was the way I was taught. 2 raised to the power of 2 = 2×2=4
