Given my pos pc atm, tf2 is the only thing i can play that doesnt cause a system lock after 5 minutes. But can anything be done about the backburner? the weapon is completely broken, (crits from every direction, not just the back.) Can it be disallowed with a server variable until valve fixes it. if it really comes down it, ill get a fraps video of a frontal crit with it to prove my point of how it can frontal crit. i have even reached the point of hate that i would welcome pyro max class to be 0. I write this after reaching the point of frustration that valve has managed to **** up a class and shatter class balance.

Why the cursing? Why hate the pyro? Stickies still blow it away and snipers still 1 shot it, spies still 1 stab it, I think even with 100% crits its balanced just cus it runs slow :X

Personally as pyro I don't use backburner even though I have it, I love throwing sentry rockets and soldier rockets back at them WAY too much.

Honestly I haven't had a lot of experience with it yet, but I'm guessing that it's going to work similar to the spy's backstab in that it sometimes triggers from a frontal attack. I think the reason for this is due to how the network code (collision prediction) works in the game.

I would be very surprised if the backburner always crits from the front, but just like the knife, I expect that there will be the occasional "front crit".

As Spartan.Ninja said though, I love the air push too much to really use the backburner much anyway.

I get crits all of the time with the default flamethrower and manage to get lucky with the Backburner with crits from the front. It doesn't crit from "all directions," it can crit from the back and you can pull a standard critical hit off with it just like any other normal weapon.

Although I do have all of the newer Pyro weapons unlocked, I don't use them all. I've got about 40 hours put into Pyro as my most-played class and find the Backburner quite disappointing. Sure the extra 50 health and crit from behind is nice, but with the added Compression Blast is just too precious to give up.

The Flare Gun is also a big letdown as I most of the time finish off running enemies with the shotgun, the reload time for the Flare Gun makes me cry along with the damage it does. I rarely switch to melee after I set someone on fire and when I do, I always finish 'em off with my flamethrower despite the fact them being in melee range. The 100% critical strike chance when the enemy's on fire is great, but the reduced standard hits also smacks me in the face. If you're horrible at melee fighting (or just the overall game) like I am, you'll end up missing your opponent while they're ignited and by the time you DO land a hit on them, they've already been extinguished or the fire's gone out... that and I usually go toe-to-toe with a lot of Pyros, so the Axtinguisher isn't suited for me.

tl;dr - The patch's new weapons were a big letdown for me, Pyro's not broken, just the weapons are a common misconception.

I have no problems with the regular flamethrower, i even love the airblast (about 40 hours roughly as well, mostly pre-current patch and outside the medic achievement time that i managed to best my pyro stats with heavy due to all the medics. which had been my best class) the backburner, its the fact of the proccing, to the mmo term, with no fallout damage (very apparent in engie now, ive actually manage to kill pyros with a shottie, don't ask me how) The flare gun, its odd, there are times it really seems nice to have, and times you ask yourself why did i pick this, the axetinguisher, well, i often melee with pyro with normal axe, because of people don't expect it from a pyro, and usually its mainly to hit a heavy with, or overhealed class to drop. The no damage fallout is painstakingly apparent with pyro now, and ive noticed something very odd with backburners, and knockback resistance, (i'm not really sure what, but it seems odd with some items that i can reach areas normally denied from weapon hits) not to mention they have more health than a soldier, and with soldiers much poorer speed, one miss as a pyro closes with four rockets if you can't juggle him means you get maybe 2 shotgun blasts before you go down. Pyro speed and and his maneuverability, means grenades are right useless, stickies too with convential flamethrower (but grenades are a tad more viable) and really relegates them to purely defensive roles, mostly (If you've seen me playing demo on Blackmesa defending L or C, you've know what a royal pain it is to push in there even with medics. One smart airblast pyro finally used it to push me up into the ceiling fan after about 15-18 kills.) The cussing is because ive experienced that little bug more often than i care to count, worse still i had high hopes for pyro, this is like being offered a shiny new car and finding out its become a piece of junk when you see it actually. i wrote while ticked, agitated, and pretty much, blowing off steam that i needed to get off my chest.

Point #1. The backburner can still get normal crits when facing an enemy, they are not taken away, the only part taken away from the pyro is the compression blast.

Point #2. It is called TEAM Fortress 2 for a reason. It takes teamwork to take certain units. Take the heavy for example. If a scout rushes a heavy head on 1 on 1, that scout is almost sure to die. So why would you rush head on against the pyro?

every time i use the backburner i get back crits, i dont get y people are complaining about it it works

Thats half the problem blackhawk, pyros are the 2nd fastest class out there, a soldier/demo can't run from a pyro (you certainly don't want one with a free chance to your back) sniper, yes, but thats normally flare gun shots, medic i fire retreating with blutsauger (usually i can get to health and leech enough to stall/semi-heal damage) its with demo and soldier, you have to fight, charging a pyro, thats suicide usually (depends how you go about it) im referring more to fighting and retreating if possible.

Once again, refer to my heavy comparision. Certain units take certain tactics to take down.

If they are using the backburner, they have no way to block your rockets and if they are getting that close, use the rockets to keep the away.

I found the new additions made playing pyro worth while finally.

In my own opinion I do not beleive that the backburner is that broken of a weapon. The only problem that I do have with the pyro at this time is the fact that the flamethrower can flame underwater. I guess when Valve modified the falloff range for the flamethrower they messed somthing up with regards to the cutoff that extinguishes the flames when the pyro is bouncing along the surface of the water.

When the pyro is above water, they always have been able to use the flame thrower, that hasnt changed in the update

Exactly. Just like the Axetinguisher can still get criticals if the enemy is not on fire. Also take into account those crit strings after achieving so much damage.

Base flamethrower > backburner, just because of the compression.

Hold up there sparky. The axetinguisher is not supposed to crit if the enemy isn't on fire. The descriptions says that it has 100% crit on burning enemies, 50% damage to non-burning enemies, and doesn't crit on non-burning enemies. It sounds like you've actually found a bug, not something meant to be in there.

Also, yeah, pyros have always been able to torch people if they bounce along the surface. However, they still don't catch on fire. Also, the backburner does not say that it won't crit unless it hits the back. Sounds like there are problems of you just getting burned by random crits. Besides, the pyro is now actually what it's supposed to have been originally. Pyro was meant to be the king of close-range combat. Previously a pyro and a soldier/demoman/heavy at point blank or otherwise close range with both players at equal skill level would ALWAYS result in the pyro's death. They just had higher damage output at that range. Besides, I don't really think it's fair to be calling cheap just yet. Remember, pyro is the only class meant to fight people that's actually gotten weapon upgrades. You may be crying broken now, then call it underpowered when the soldier, demo, and heavy get their turn. I will admit though that I hate the number of pyros on every server out there. I try to pick pyro on my team if there's 1 or 2 because it's been my primary class for quite a while now, but that's soon down the drain when another 10 people decide to class switch to pyro also.

+1

Exactly :)

I disagree Sniper, scout would own the heavy with his bat! 'nuff said lol
