30 second warning... for five minutes!

Hola all,

one of the interesting things about Blackmesa is that a game can almost never end when both teams are capturing quickly. This has been very noticable the past 2 nites were a few games have gone 5 minutes or more in the last 30 second warning phase.

personally i lub the tension but I wanted to get a better snapshot of what you guys thought.

I'm looking over changes for a "Blackmesa2" map. current changes involve the stair wells (making them circular vs the current version), new vent access point to help soften the engie rat tunnel effect, better ceiling vent access points so the demo and soldier can jump quicker into them, lighting changes so HDR is not so intense, more player clipping around furniture (i got snagged last nite), improvements to the spawn room (i need to make those prop dynamics into prop statics), try to work in the G-man, more direction art (overlays on the floor, walls), additional polish in various areas.

And last but not least, possible changing the capture time added to the clock from 30 seconds to 40 seconds. This would have the effect of increasing the probability of games lasting more than 5 minutes in the 30 second warning phase (they may go 10 minutes). Some have asked that i increase the total game time from the start. The change I'm suggesting would add a marginal increase to that if teams are indeed capturing points. The vent additions would also counter teams "turtle'ing" up on L and C. Which helps by increasing capture rate.

thought folks?

It needs more headcrabs. Everyone loves headcrabs.

Otherwise, I really like the map as is, and I'll be waiting to see what these changes will bring.

Keep up the good work.

I like blackmesa the way it is already but those last 30 secs can really go on sometimes. If there was a faster way to move through the map would help a lot because often the defenders would die, the CP would get capped and then the defenders would just respawn and take it back. Then it's just a see saw over the one point as the attackers respawn and kill them again etc etc...

Aqua, many times it's the attackers fault for not "securing" the point they just captured. The solid teams make sure an engie has set up a lvl 3 sentry and THEN move on.

but more to the point you seam to not like the tension of cap then recap for 5 min or more. The see saw that you refer to is what keeps the map going long after the timer has reached 0. which is also what defines the game play of this map over standard valve maps (for good OR bad). This is what i'm really trying to figure out before i make timer changes to a revamped version. I do not want it to be like convoy where V1 and V2 has 2 different audiences due to a minor change that has major results.

I would like the headcrabs to be more cool... Would it be possible for them to, say, move along the walls? :D

Or am I spouting dream-garbage?

While on the one hand, seeing the map be "almost done" about 50 times is kinda annoying, I have to admit it makes things really tense. You can't just sit back and hope for a stalemate, the other team will steamroll and add time to the clock. Everybody's gotta be on their game.

Moo,

sounds like blackmesa has a convert!

I like blackmesa a lot, so it didn't make much sense when it was "finished" when there were still a lot of flaws to the gameplay. Although you can beat me up for saying it later, when I think blackmesa I think "STALEMATE".

yea, there's final and then there's FINAL. I needed to stop working on it and move on to another project so I imposed a stop date. Currently i'm compiling little things i think the map can be improved on. I may or may not get it in with in a month.

As for the stalemate. Guess that can be taken many ways. I find if both teams are very aggressive it almost never ends in stalemate. If one or both teams start to be too defensive then it almost always ends in a stalemate. Which is actually what happens to a few valve maps. Sudden death was removed because too many games ended in it and they were not fun because both teams would "turtle" up. I actually wish Blackmesa server allowed sudden death because I think it's harder for engies to set up if the other team blitzkriegs. Hench low turtling.

I'm sorry to inform you Dragon,

We had to drop two servers for goldrush.

Until we get our new box. We can hopefully use it.

Didn't know goldrush turned out to be so popular ;)

Can one of them be named goldrush #2, as it is it's kind of confusing.

Not a prob Garden. Gives me a chance to work on my other project. :P

on another note, I just shut down my server. funny how that works out.

I'm looking forward to blackmesa 2 :P

It would be interesting if you made the vents more 'unique' so getting around is a little easier in them

Some of the most intense matches ever.

Love the struggle to keep the round alive.

We only have one goldrush server.

We only have 5 servers total. Due to goldrush.

I love Blackmesa. I don't think many changes are needed. The ones suggested sound great. Overall it's an amazing map. Thanks for the hard work on it.
