I've only had 2 home desktops in my life and they've both been from Dell. My first was a Dell Inspiron single core I got in 2010 and I loved it. It was ok for gaming but didn't read water too well but all in all I like it so much that in 2018 I got another Dell Inspiron but this one a 5860 and I've never had an issue. I found mine very reliable. So imaging my surprise when I talk to computer people and they almost unanimously say they actually hate Dell and wouldn't buy one. The only thing I dislike about Dell is their C.S. always tries to sell you something. I've learned a bit about service since my first pc and now never call Dell for anything. But I'm asking...

...why do people dislike Dell so much?

I think it has to do something with the name xd

Dell isn't necessarily bad but when talking to people who know about computers they would just build their own instead.

Most people who are huge geeks and build their own PCs will condemn basically every OEM provider. So that's half of it.

I don't know the current state of their product lines, but at points in time they used some very proprietary hardware that would make it impossible for you to easily upgrade or replace broken parts - specifically motherboards and PSU's that were strictly designed for Dell and nothing else.

Power supply problem? Couldn't get one from the store, you needed the exact one again due to the pin design. Other OEM manufacturers have done this too over the years.

It also would generally lack the ability to add higher end graphics cards too, because of that. Coupled with the generally slightly inflated price over buying better parts yourself for less, it was generally best to build your own for gamers.

I don't even hate it, its a pretty good system, just a little bit outdated and underused.

I have a Dell monitor at work. There have never been any problems with the monitor. I think Dell's marketers are not doing well.

I hate them for not letting me upgrade stuff without voiding the warranty
