Sup y'all,

It's me, supac, and I'm here today to share with you insight and tips I've amassed over the years on the eGo Heavy Metal server
It's incomplete at the moment, so this will be a work in progress and I'll add more when I have the chance-

I'll go over the most important aspects needed to be a top player, and I'll even put them in the front of this guide for anyone with a short attention span lol

Spotting:
One of the easiest tips, yet most important, in improving is to press Q every time you have your crosshairs on an enemy.
This will turn duels in your favor, as your team will usually all shoot at the red target, and give you information on where the enemy is, and will move to
Have the presence of mind to press Q in battle and you'll be instantly become a better teamplayer

Another tip is that you have up to 5 chances to spot with Q - if there are no enemies when you press Q 5 times, then this ability goes on cool down (this can be reset by swapping weapons - credit: xm-m8)

You can use this ability to your advantage by pressing Q in hard to see spots, like in bushes, trees, rocks, etc to find hidden enemies - this is good especially for recon, heli gunners

Another perk of spotting is that if the spotting is successful, it means you have a direct line of sight of the target (99% of the time) with your gun, which is especially helpful if the enemy is behind cover of rocks/debris.

This means if you can spot them, they are able to be shot at

Spotting is an important mechanic in the game closest to a wallhack - it reveals the enemy even if they're behind cover - meaning you can strategize accordingly with various tactics such as avoiding their flank, aiming where they're going, deny the area with rockets/grenades, etc

Burst firing
Automatic and semi auto guns in most shooting games have huge bullet spread if continuously fired (ie, holding down left click when shooting makes the bullets less accurate),
thus bringing the most important aspect of this game: burst firing.

Burst firing allows the gun to 'reset' it's aim, thus always getting true shots (directly in the center of the cross hairs)

This skill is absolutely crucial in quickly slaying enemies before they can react, run, or return fire

Once this skill is mastered, your bullets will always reach it's destination-
It's extremely vital to master this skill for mid range duels, (which is the bulk of all fights you'll have on this server, unless you play in vehicles)
One missed bullet = life and death in each duel, so having each bullet connect with your target is crucial

The actual skill combo is simple - start by clicking your right click mouse button to scope/aim down your iron sights, then:
  • Click your left mouse button ONCE (assuming left mouse button is your 'shoot' button)
  • WAIT
  • click your left button ONE time again
  • WAIT
  • repeat
If done right, the gun will shoot a single or double bullet directly where you aim it

Go practice on a wall near the base, nearly all your shots will hit the center if done properly

Depending on how heavy/long you click, and the speed of your gun, your gun will fire one or two shots that are true to the center of your cross hairs
Guns that are quicker like the uzi, or medic weapons will often fire two bullets instead of 1

The wait time in between each combo is different for each gun, some guns reset it's 'true aim' quicker, some slower

One of the prerequisites to master this skill is learning the "cooldown" of your gun and learning when your gun ''resets'' it's aim after each shot. Usually this is all done subconsciously through time.

Learning your gun's cooldown is absolutely vital to mastering burst firing, and prevent gun spray, which will ensure more accurate shots

The range of your target matters as well, as further targets need truer shots, thus a longer wait time between each shot

Crouching will increase accuracy for each bullet as well, which is especially useful for opponents at further ranges - however crouching should be used very sparingly - only when you're sure you have adequate cover or if you can score a quick kill

Burst firing should be one of the only times you stand still to quickly slay an enemy, especially if you find a stationary enemy or enemy that isn't paying attention.

It's a very simple skill to learn, but to master it, (especially under pressure of getting shot at in a duel) takes practice.

This skill is maximized with guns that are automatic (ie: they shoot really fast)
Bolt action guns can also benefit from burst firing as well, to reset the true aim - but because they can only shoot a single shot at a time, automatic guns will have a higher skill ceiling (ie harder to master)

Duelling
This is the bread and butter of this game - each gunfight you get in with an opponent is a 'duel', so winning these is crucial in advancing the front line towards the objective and racking up a high KDR

In a gun fight, the player that finds the other first is usually the one that wins, so using magnum ammo for gun damage is crucial on the battlefield

Explosive damage talent is alright if you want to be a team player and destroy tanks, but that's pretty much all it's good for (rarely do transport helis bring armor talent, which sometimes need two rockets to kill)

Burst firing from the above section is absolutely needed to quickly eliminate enemies - missed bullets will give enemies time to react/return fire

Finding cover:
This is one of the most important factors in mid range duels

If you initiate a fight and can't down your enemy before they react, then having cover is a huge edge

This should always be in your mind when moving from location to location, and 'picking' fights

Finding cover behind a hill, behind a rock, etc minimizes your risk, because the enemy has less of your body to aim at
The player that has more cover will usually win (assuming equal skill/guns, etc)

Fighting in open fields is almost always a loss in a duel, so finding cover and moving from cover to cover is very important in advancing in the map
Being in an open field = open target = death, ESPECIALLY if you're spotted

Even hiding behind leaves of a tree or a bush is sometimes better than nothing, just to obscure yourself from the vision of the enemy

One of the most important aspects of each duel is knowing when to take them, and when to retreat.
Don't be afraid to retreat if your opponent is under cover of terrain
Start sprinting and zig zagging away to find cover in between the bullets and your opponent, then re-assess the situation

Don't be afraid to retreat if you're low or outnumbered either

You'll almost never want to run in straight, predictable lines when retreating, when you're spotted, or when you're being shot at -

Manually strafing (hitting sprint, W and zig zagging) is important here, sometimes this looks like dancing - because you definitely want to dodge those bullets/rockets

Strafing:
(under construction)

Strafing (the A and D button) is another important skill to master in this game.
Standing still in the same spot will make it very easy for a good opponent to burst fire/snipe you.
Very rarely should you stand still in this game (only when you're behind cover, capping flags or hiding from bullets/enemies)

If you're in an open field and are forced to duel (ie there's no cover to run to nearby), then strafing in between shots can win you the duel

In close range fights, strafing will win you fights as well

In extremely close range fights, strafing and jumping will win you fights sometimes (bullet spread doesn't matter as much, as the target is much closer)

Strafing and burst firing is another crucial technique at higher levels of play that will help you dodge bullets in a duel, especially due to ping differences

The technique of aiming, and having the presence of mind to burst fire all while strafing is very hard to perform under pressure, so don't be discouraged if this doesn't work out, as it takes a while to learn

This skill is important to learn for mobility - standing still while shooting will almost always guarantee death in a duel/hectic battlefield

Sometimes tapping the strafe button is easier than moving your mouse when aiming at long range targets, as aim gets very difficult/precise at longer ranges (sometimes the mouse moves too far, so strafing is a better option to manually adjust the aim)

When you have to pop your head over a hill or scout an open field, it's important to strafe back and forth to prevent instant deaths from headshots, especially at the two hills at B: the UAV hill and AA hill

You should almost never stand still there unless scoring a quick kill or if a vehicle is approaching (most vehicles look for moving targets, standing still/crouching behind cover/in bushes sometimes makes it harder to find u)

General Strategy (under construction):

The general strategy for this map is to hold your nearest base as well as B.

B is obviously vital in winning the map due to extra vehicle spawns, anti air, insane high ground advantage, and the UAV.

From a winning perspective (meaning you already have two bases, including B), then holding high ground is crucial in fortifying the B base.

It prevents leaks (when enemies try to sneak into your deep base) via spotting, and the cover that's provided by the hill is invaluable.

If the US side gets a tank on the high peak at the UAV hill, it becomes almost impossible for the enemy to killthe tank/advance. This tank spot near the top is very cheesy and has HUGE impact in stopping pushes. (and honestly the boundary lines should be tightened a bit to remedy this spot)

The winning strategy doesn't really need to be discussed in detail, (since if u have B, u usually already have the stronger team) but mostly if you hold high ground, prevent leaks, and have a strong frontline at B, then the game is already decided

Now for the strategy from the losing perspective, which in my opinion is enjoyable due to the challenge,
Advancing to B:

This task is extremely difficult and requires utilization of all your assets.
Ideally, all 3 tanks and the attack heli should be used, but if there aren't that many players, having a heli and at least one tank is vital in pushing

For tanks, the tank at your near base (A or C base), is important as it requires less distance to travel on respawn, which means you can keep the pressure high. Restarting after a death with a tank from base takes way too long, and any space that you've won will be lost.

Do not take this forward tank if you're a camper (we already know who they are :)

Squad up if you haven't already

The first objective is NOT to rush to B.
The first objective is to secure a foothold at the space before B (which is the windmill if you're on the Russian side, and the rocks if you're on the US side)

Securing this area allows the rest of your team to catch up, so in this regard, these areas should be considered "mini bases", and are crucial when pushing.

These areas establish a relative "safety zone" for your team, as everything up to this point should be relatively safe to traverse

The ideal strategy would be for a tanks with smokes to take the dirt path, with infantry escorting him, and the heli providing air support behind/near the tank

Even with this ideal strategy, pushing is very difficult against a strong team, unless you can kill a handful of enemies in quick succession

Pushing the front line forward is a very difficult task that requires patience to not rush in, and having teammates camp/secure the "mini bases" until your team can catch up.

Sometimes this never happens, but regardless, you shouldn't recklessly rush in to B

Using your minimap is important here as well, to gauge where your team is on the map, so that you don't push too far solo

Once the mini base is secured, the next objective is to safely enter B, which I've found the safest path is to get to the UAV hill and slowly secure the base of the UAV hill (works for both US/RU side)

Besides all this, there is an alternative strategy of capturing the opponent's deep base (A or C), but this strategy is VERY risky and involves many more deaths. Defending these far bases are also a huge loss of tickets usually, as these bases can be spawn camped.

These bases however can indeed win games, but is too unreliable to depend on

Misc tips:
Watching the minimap:
A huge portion of the battle derives from knowing your surroundings -
in any strategy game it's important to know where the enemy is, where your team is, etc

The minimap on the bottom left should be within your peripheral vision to prevent surprise attacks (to see where spotted enemies are) and to watch for flanks (if your team is good enough to spot them for you)

You can also see where vehicles get emptied out - when enemies bail from the jeeps, it'll show up as an empty vehicle on your map. With this knowledge, you can also guess which area they will be in, and which direction they're headed - very useful for hunting enemies

Another tip is to bind the larger map to a hotkey (I bind my map button to the 'g' key) so that you can see the overall battlefield - very useful for seeing which vehicles are being used, where spotted enemies are, etc.

Binding the map key and using it is especially useful for helicopter pilots, to know when the enemy has a helicopter in the air, and also useful to know how many tanks are deployed (empty vehicles on the map mean the enemy isn't using them)

Sound:
It's crucial to use be aware of the sound in this game to protect yourself from threats in your immediate area -

Having headphones/earbuds with dedicated left/right sounds will help tremendously in telling you where the enemy is. (make sure you have them on correctly too, i've had too many times where I put my earbuds on wrong and mixed left and right sounds, which is very disorienting if you pay attention to sound)

Using the sound to listen for footsteps, stray bullets, and vehicles, can tell you which direction the enemy is.

A huge tip is also to know which team you're on, as you can tell if there are enemies nearby if they use the English voice or the Russian voice on the battlefield - (if you're on the US team, then be aware of Russian soldier voices on the battlefield, and vice versa)

The soldiers in game will ocassionally yell out in their language depending on what's going on in the environment - such as grenades, snipers, etc. This will tell you directionally which way the enemy is, and can help you find hidden enemies that are yet to be spotted

I've found so many enemies and called a hacker because of this - so make sure you utilize the sound in the game -

Mastering the AT4:
(under construction)
Follow xm-m8's AT4 guide, it is very comprehensive and has pretty much everything I can think of - I'll write up a section for the AT4 if I have a chance

Weapons
(under construction)

Here I'll go over weapons, and the best weps for Engy/Recon, the two most important classes on Heavy Metal.
I'll attach a chart at the end of the thread for anyone interested in looking at the stats of a weapon

Engineer weapons:

The best weapon is the one you're used to (Some ironsights are worse than others + obscure too much vision)

It's all tied to personal preference, but in Heavy Metal, most gun fights will be had at mid to long range, so it's important to have either a good scope (4x or red dot) on one of the SMG engy weapons or use the g3

But objectively, there are weapons that are better than others purely on stats alone (you can check the chart at the bottom)

Primary weapon:
One of the best weapons by far is the G3 - very accurate with burst firing, has full auto for close range duels, huge damage per bullet/sec, especially with the magnum spec (which should always be used, as ground kills are by far the most kills you'll get)

the G3 is the strongest gun in the game in terms of damage - and is only 2nd in damage to the m14 and m1 garand (which are bolt action/single shot which makes gives them a very low skill ceiling - you can't burst fire or rapid fire these guns, which severely limits how fast you can down an enemy)

Once you learn how to burst fire with this gun, and get a feel for the the internal cooldown, most duels will be won due to the high damage output/accuracy of this wep, with roughly:
5 shots max at long range
4 shots at mid range
3 shots at close range

The engy weapons are also decent (uzi/xm8), but mostly excel at close range (due to the perk of having low bullet spray, allowing to be fired from the hip with low penalty ) but I find it lacking at range, needing 5+ shots to kill - even with scope, I find it too tedious to connect 7+ shots at long range

Secondary weapon:
MP-443 Grach pistol wins hands down, this is the best side arm due to it's quick fire rate and relatively high damage
All the best players on the server use it, as other pistols are inferior

Sniper weapons:

SV98 is probably the best sniper gun with 10 rounds, quick scope, a quick reload time in between shots, most sniper duels will be won, especially since the other sniper will be busy reloading (rarely will snipers have max rounds ready to fire anyways)

GOL is probably second best

VSS/SVU I've seen to be decent up to mid range, but at far ranges, it's not as good as the true bolt action sniper rifles

Don't even mention the T88S - I wipe my ass with this trash gun lol

M24 has way too much bullet drop, and very weak damage
M95 has too long of a reload animation and scope time

Classes
1. Engineer - most needed on this map to destroy vehicles via rpg7/at4/CG rockets
2. Recon - 2nd most needed for spotting / mortar / mid to long range ground support
3. Assault - ammo refills / c4
4. Medic - not necessary due to quick respawn, only needed in ground clashes at flags, which is rare enough

finaly someone with energy and knowledge to put all this together...

few remarks:
- spot (Q) overheats after some time, switching weapons while spotting speeds up Q recovery (no official data on this, just personal observation)
- if you master recoil (tapfire), crouching is not necessary and is contraproductive. you are slow and easy to snipe, easier target overall.
- jumping before shooting creates accuracy penalty for about 2 seconds. avoid it even in close quarter (easy to say, i jump all the time too:)). effective jumping technique un close quarters is jumping over enemy and immediately turn arond and shoot him. many people do not expect this and have low mouse sensitivity, so 180 degree turn lasts them longer or they need 2 or more mouse movements to do it)
- stats you provided: i do not agree with damage with armor. armor perk increases your life by 25%. weapon damage stays on base level, does not go lower (you just need more shots if your enemy wears armor, as his life is 125HP)
- all weapons other than bolt action sniper rifles have 2,1x damage multiplier if headshot
- bolt actions have 3,25x damage multiplier if headshot = one shot headshot at any distance, even if target wears armor

The only real tip I can share is about mortars.
If they can mortar you, they're spottable.
The mortars always fall from over the recon's location. If you watch how they come down, the angle will tell you where the recon is.

One more you guys probably know already...Trubble is the one who told me, after playing the game for close to a decade, that helos with a passenger won't get damaged by tree collisions. (He was pizzed when I bailed over VADS...can't blame him, really. ;p)

jumping before shooting creates accuracy penalty for about 2 seconds.
yes, jumping does add a penalty to aim (larger cross hair area), but at very close range (1-5m), the spray doesn't matter as much, as the enemy target is larger as well, so most bullets will hit

at least that's what I've found with the G3 - haven't really tried with the SMGs yet

if you master recoil (tapfire), crouching is not necessary and is contraproductive. you are slow and easy to snipe, easier target overall.
crouching is still important as it lowers the cooldown for recoil as well, even if it's a few fractions of a second, sometimes it's enough

in the wiki (not sure how accurate it is) there's a recoil bonus for crouching with the g3, my main gun
https://battlefield.fandom.com/wiki/G3/Bad_Company_2

you're right tho crouching is dangerous in most cases, I only crouch+fire if I have good cover, like rocks between me and the rest of the enemies

---

i also found this blog from someone who took info from the game code:

https://denkirson.wordpress.com/2010/12/16/bad-company-2/

some interesting points:

-Soldier health is 100.
-Ceramic Body Armor is 125. (so you're right)
-Six seconds after taking damage, the player will recover three health per second. (not sure if this applies to our server)
-Weapons universally recover 3.0 degrees of spread per second. (recoil and bullet spread)
-LMGs, the G3 and Semi-Auto primary weapons recover 5.0 spread a second when zoomed, resulting in greater accuracy with successive shots.
-The Tracer Dart lasts for 45 seconds after sticking to something.
-Tanks and APCs take extra damage from the side and rear. (most people don't know this yet)
-To minimize damage to those weak sides, armored vehicles can angle themselves against incoming attack to decrease damage.
-The steeper the angle, the lower the damage (to a minimum of the indicated “ANGLE” number).
- Vehicle Armor [talent] will only improve a vehicle’s defense when the driver has it.
- Warhead and Reload will only improve the damage or reload time of the seat the player is in.
-Spotting, like the repair tool, uses “overheat” to prevent excessive Socialize use.
-The player is capable of about five [Q] button presses in rapid succession before overheating and being inoperable for five seconds.

that's a very comprehensive guide already, good work, I might add it to the top section for reference

I'll write something about the AT4when I get a chance, but I think your video covered pretty much everything I can think of

I've also edited the duelling section up top a bit for clarification

Not play-related... The BFBC2 Login Nightmare

Before you start up BFBC2, go to ea.com and login there first. Wait a minute or so then start up the game server... I've found that doing this makes logging into the game itself much, much easier. A couple of other players have confirmed the difference.

I have been playing for some time, and this is new to me, although I normally try to avoid trees, I might try this out next time I have a passenger. It seems like I have crashed the hind before, killing all on board from a tree.

oh the mortar thing is crazy. never heard this, have to pay attention next time i play. thx!
Let me know how it works for you. It helps me spot wookies on the regular because they can't mortar you unless your in spotting range. It's easier to see if you're not right under them...but the steeper the angle they come in at, the closer the recon will be. It's actually kind of the same way the UAV works.

Sorry, I didn't word that right. You're not immune, but hitting trees that would kill a solo pilot do no damage to a pilot and gunner. For example, the US helipad has trees around it but you can fly right through them and all the trees at the uncap border with no damage, but only if you have a gunner. You can land the BH in the VADS cliff trees if you have passengers, but you'll blow up if you land alone. But you also can't fly through the dense stuff like on the right side going to B from the US passengers or not.

After you log in at EA.com , do you minimize the webpage or do you just close it ?

You can fly through a whole forest if you have at least 1 passenger , I do it all the time when leaving the Russian Uncap , I also do it leaving the US uncap if I have a passenger (+) , no damage is accrued , which is a bit ridiculous when you think about it , after all it is still the same helicopter .

This definitely works , I spot snipers this way all the time , or at least know the direction they are in to investigate , the pitch of the Mortars coming down also gives you a good idea of how far away they are .

Primary weapon:
Best weapon by far is the G3 - accurate, semi-auto for close range duels, huge damage per bullet/sec, especially with the magnum spec (which should always be used, as ground kills are by far the most kills you'll get) "

The G3 is NOT semi-auto , it is full auto , you pull and hold the trigger and it just keeps on shooting , excellent when someone's in your face
