Why not just integrate it with our current server? Gonna be honest here, I don't like that I'm in 4 eGO servers to begin with. The Main One, Overwatch, Destiny, Special Teams. The more simple the better in my opinion.

Sure why not.

I don't like that I'm in 4 eGO servers

It used to be that everything was in the main Discord Server, and tbh it was scuffed and just cramped with stuff. Yeah I don't like having to be in 12 different eGO Discord Servers but its better then an unorganized main discord.

I made this suggestion and I will expand a little about why I feel like having a Nintendo discord, as well as multiple discords over one is far more beneficial to community expansion, recruitment and outreach.

I'm going to start with Snowy's counter-argument because it is probably the most common negative side to having more discords, it crowds your sidebar with servers if you chose to join a lot of them. I think this is very valid, but I would argue that trying to keep everything within one main discord is even more crowded and disorganized. For a community as big as ours, we should not have all of our discord-based supported games inside of one discord because it becomes very hard to navigate with so many different channels, its overwhelming to many new members and even seasoned members.

The second argument for having themed discords for different specialty games like Overwatch, Destiny, Genshin and Nintendo is outreach and recruitment is so much easier than if they were stuck inside the main discord, the primary reason for this being that when people search the keyword for a new discord to join, they are more likely to join "EdgeGamers Overwatch" instead of "EdgeGamers Organization". Even if new members join the main discord, they will be overwhelmed by everything not related to the game they searched for. It is far easier to recruit members to the whole of the community by first introducing them to the community based on the game they like the most, then as they become comfortable they can begin to see the rest of the community at their own pace.

TLDR; More discords may be hard on the eyes for us seasoned members at times, but it is a huge blessing when it comes to recruitment and accessibility to new members who may get overwhelmed by the main discord.

On to "Why Nintendo?"

Nintendo is easily one of the largest communities we have not tapped into. There is definitely a large amount of community members that have Switches, play with other members of the community in their free time and are most likely going to enjoy this discord. Nintendo has several games that can easily have constantly active voice channels as well as fun and creative events. These include, but are not limited to; Smash Bros, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Splatoon, Mario Party and Mario Maker. At one point where both Pokemon and Smash Bros floated in my head as possible supported games completely on their own, until I had the obvious realization this makes way more sense.

Nintendo Discords are in high demand, we definitely have the potential to create one of the best.

I think trying to integrate a Nintendo section as a concept into the main server is doomed from the start. Having separate servers allows each server to get more granularity in their direction as well as being less likely to be lost in the shuffle of the main discord.

how many more discords are we as a community going to create?

its like frito lay

funyuns made by frito lay
nintendo discord branded by eGO

especially when the main discord needs work anyway, i dont see why we should keep making more unless its a supported game group

Perhaps the poll should be rephrased to ask if Nintendo should be a supported game group rather than just a discord. Keep in mind there is a difference between discords for supported games that have dedicated servers like FiveM, and discords for supported games that cannot actually have a dedicated server like Nintendo, Overwatch and Genshin.

I do agree that the main discord needs a lot of work, but part of the issue is there is so many channels that are either unnecessary or dead. More discords for supported games = less noise in the main discord imo.

Other than the main discord being cluttered though, why do you argue that the main discord needing work as a reason to not expand into new territory? Those in charge of cleaning the main discord wouldn't be the ones in charge of the Nintendo one

Are you referring to recent expansions into other games? because this is objectively untrue. (Not trying to be rude.)

I'm just saying that we are at like, 6 discords for the normal player in our community and even more test and special ones if you're more involved in the community. It's asinine to keep making more and more discords (even for something like Nintendo, which I believe to be way too broad of a subject for an entire eGO discord) when in reality, we could make channel categories for each supported game and throw them in there and let players toggle visibility on the stuff they want to see.

D2 verged off from this because it wanted to be extremely focused on Destiny which worked out well. But now, we have D2, Overwatch, Genshin, FiveM, Special Teams, and what have you that look like they are entirely different from eGO except for the fact they share the same name. The main discord is just a glorified general chat and I could genuinely leave it and not see anything change for myself.

I don't want to keep joining different discord servers, having to relearn the bots and have to take time out of my day to get admin trained for them just to talk about <topic of discord>.

I genuinely think the best thing we could do as a community is consolidate everything into the main discord, which may sound like absolute chaos, but it's doable. Making more discords is just a bandaid on the problem

I have been in consolidated communities before. The thought of having multiple active voice chats for a bunch of different games may sound nice at first, but it is not. It is absolute chaos, the discord will have twice as many channels as it has now, and even if it was organized to the best of our ability it will be painful on the eyes and intimidating.

As for recruitment, I do not think having all games in one discord will result in as much success. Overwatch has over 1700 members, if we were merged with the main discord from the beginning I would argue that number would be less than 1000 for two reasons; members leaving after joining because they are intimidated by how broad the discord is, and members who never join because the title of the discord doesn't say "Overwatch", therefore they think we don't specialize in it. Many people who we recruit don't want the extra noise of being a part of a massive community, some do and eventually play the other games we have.

You mentioned D2 having its own discord because it wanted to be specialized for what it was, and that worked. It is also working for other games as well, and I think it'd be imperative for the success of possible future games like S&Box and even Halo. Every supported game wants that space to be specialized, and having them crammed into one discord limits the amount of room for specialization and creativity.

Separation and allowing players to pick what they want to see is the fundamental part. Leadership who could see every channel is going to be rough, but hey, that's the way the cookie crumbles. By having multiple outside Discords, you give less of a reason for people to join the main Discord because they already chat with their main group of people within that privatized game discord. The reason most people cling to TeamSpeak is twofold: they like the voice quality and everything you could possibly need was in that ONE server. It made things straightforward and easy. Needed to talk to Minecraft people? Join the Minecraft channel. Wanted to talk to Member Services? Join the cozy lounge. It was an All in One solution. Nowadays, I have to server hop to find someone and join that channel just to talk with them while my other friends are off in another server.

Absolute chaos? Sure. But it's player centric chaos.

Genuine question: how many Overwatch players actually join the forums and/or the main discord? Isn't that the main goal? Yes, it's cool seeing Overwatch or BF or Genshin grow but what's the point if they aren't integrating into the community? The only real thing that ties Overwatch to eGO is the name, if you were to drop the name, change the roles, delete #ego-news, nothing changes. In places I expect there to be advertisements for our other servers, there's nothing. You get a blue hyperlink in #information that a normal player could just miss entirely. You could see something #announcements but you have to scroll up hard for it.

Contrast this with something like CS. CS has rules and everything on the main website. CS has awards to give on the forums (which I don't fault you, awards are on the comeback but just saying). CS forces people to use the forums via a suggestions page, a server changelog, and to contest and request bans. Hell, they link the main discord in chat every other 2 minutes. Overwatch does all of that pretty much in house. There's nothing tying Overwatch to eGO except the name and that's an issue because it limits player mobility to view and look at our other stuff within the community that they might be interested in.

You mentioned D2 having its own discord because it wanted to be specialized for what it was, and that worked. I don't think so. I think, from a general perspective, you'd actually have better recruitment numbers because you have more people in the main discord than a fresh one. 4.1k > 120. I'd pick the 4.1k because there's more people there. In fact, I think there's more creativity in how we can make the main Discord better with ideas from all of the other discords mixed together to create a cohesive experience for everybody. It's worked in other massive communities, no different here.

At the end of the day, you're going to hit an upper bound on how many people are going to be joining more eGO <game group> discords simply because it's not centralized and easy for people to check in on.

This is getting a little off track because none of the discussion we have had is actually about Nintendo. It is an important discussion to have, but we should have a separate thread for it.

Dr. Havok Dr. Havok if we can rephrase this poll a bit, perhaps we should just be asking if we should support Nintendo as a game group, doesn't matter if it's as its own discord or merged, that can be determined later on if it gets accepted.

In my mind each Discord is effectively its own community. Sure, it’s all under “EdgeGamers” but as kuantum kuantum puts it, if you go from the OW Discord to FiveM’s you’ll find completely different players. Each discord splits the community up, which is great if your expectations and infrastructure is intended to be that way.

For those asking “why not”: it takes time and effort to make a new discord. Setup, bots, moderation, promotion, engagement, etc.

I personally would probably interact with a Nintendo specific EdgeGamers server. But, I don’t currently see the reason why we couldn’t just have a #nintendo, #valve, or #microsoft under a Gaming Section.

I agree with Cel the original idea of this post has gone a little off-topic, but it has some themes that perhaps need to be looked at or discussed as a community. (Maybe another post should be created somewhere?)

Let me stick my neck out for Overwatch just for a second though.
how many Overwatch players actually join the forums and/or the main discord?
I can get you the actual numbers if you are really curious about how many people join Overwatch, but we have an active recruitment team that not only recruits for the Overwatch server but goes out of their way to try to get people to sign up for their e-tag on the forums. (Shoutout to @b t the is doing a great job.)

Now for the main discord, I don't know how much that is promoted, but I feel that's the same way in every game. Even if the link is being spammed in chat. Let's be honest, not a lot of people use it, but that's a whole issue for another day.

Contrast this with something like CS. CS has rules and everything on the main website
Overwatch rules are almost exactly the same as the eGO Code of conduct with only a little extra relating to Overwatch. It is a little unfair to compare to CS rules because a sever like Jailbreak and TTT is way more complicated with their specific rules. Having a discord without a rules tab would not make sense.
CS forces people to use the forums via a suggestions page, a server changelog, and to contest and request bans.
Suggestions for Overwatch are meant to be on the forums we just don't get them that often. We don't have a dedicated server so we don't have a changelog, however, whenever we add something to the server or something changes there is usually is a forum post that comes along with it (Recent post about PokeTwo for example.) Ban contests and requests are both done the same way as it is in other games, we just don't ban as many people, and not many people contest.

Something to keep in mind, like said above is that Overwatch is a discord, not a dedicated server, which I feel adds difficulty to things such as recruiting, getting people to use the forums, etc. (Not that we aren't striving for that).
There's nothing tying Overwatch to eGO except the name
This is where I have to say you went a little far. Saying there is nothing to Overwatch except the eGO name is just simply not true and slightly offensive to the people who are working hard to recruit people within Overwatch.

it limits player mobility to view and look at our other stuff within the community that they might be interested in.
I really want you to elaborate a little more on this if you could, are you implying Overwatch is gatekeeping players? I really don't know what you mean by this.

If you have any specific suggestions to help Overwatch then you are always free to make a suggestion post or contact @Star or I. We would really appreciate it.

There are a handful of people that are interested in a Nintendo server both as leadership and event coordinators, especially for Pokemon and Smash. There is no real "reason" for a Nintendo server but the same can be said for any community expansion. The community would probably be fine for a long time if we didn't expand into any new games for years, but there also is no fun in that.

If done right, Nintendo can be very big because of the broad variety of games that can be represented and types of events they can host.

Smash bros can have 1v1 lobbies, skirmishes and full fledged tournaments

Animal Crossing can have island sharing, item trading, design contests and more

Pokemon tournaments, contests, gigantimax battles, trading and more

Mario kart can have cups as well as general racing events

Splatoon team skirmishes and tourneys

And the list goes on. I believe it should be its own supported game, and not just a text channel because nothing listed above is possible if we limit it to that.

My point is that if you didn't have an RC team, you'd see less than stellar forum registrations. b t does a great job, I'm not going to say he isn't. I'm just saying there's not a lot of recruiting going on outside of the RC's, whether that be links to the main discord and other discords, or posts to the forums themselves.
I'm not saying to make a lot of custom rules. I'm just saying that to view the eGO code of conduct (without being forced), you'd have to visit the website. You might say that's a bit backwards to go to the forum to view rules, but it gets people's foot in the door to the heart of the community.
This is where I have to say you went a little far. Saying there is nothing to Overwatch except the eGO name is just simply not true and slightly offensive to the people who are working hard to recruit people within Overwatch.
I'm sorry you think it's offensive, but from where I'm standing, you could take the "EdgeGamers" out of the title, and the server could stand on it's own and do it's own thing. There's next to no advertisement for the main discord, you can search "discord.gg/edgegamers" and see one event post from Martin back on 11/24/2021 and one from Wish about a month before that. The RC team is doing a good job with recruiting players, sure, but there's no other advertisement for our forums except via the #ego-news section which links the news posts.

You can take all of that away and I would honestly believe the Overwatch group of players would not notice anything different except the various name changes.

And I'm not saying that Overwatch without eGO is nothing or vice versa. I'm saying it's not as a mutually beneficial as it should be.
I really want you to elaborate a little more on this if you could, are you implying Overwatch is gatekeeping players? I really don't know what you mean by this.
I'm explicitly stating that Overwatch (with the exception of the RC team) could do more to link to our forums and other discords more than it does currently. I'm also explicitly stating that we should at least have a real conversation about consolidating everything.

Are you referring to recent expansions into other games? because this is objectively untrue. (Not trying to be rude.)
I mean if you come by TTT, MG, Surf (in general any CSGO server, with a small exception on JB), you'll notice that it's mostly swarmed with people who won't really stay around for more than e.g. a week per say. Other than that, its the typical ban evaders going around the servers and a group of small timezones where the servers get filled (mainly NA prime time) for a while.

From my point of view back in 2019 and 2020 before all this FiveM (and many more game/servers) happened, servers were constantly filled to the point it was impossible to find peace, except for a few hours when NA players went to sleep. Nowadays most CS servers feel dead empty for much more hours than ever before.

Anyway my opinion is that, the further someone wants to expand, he also needs to have player gains for the community. I don't mind expanding into that community, but we're at a stagnant point of population, to the point I believe it will just further diminish all kind of servers even more.
