Nvidia GeForce 9800 gx2 1GB

Or

ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 1 GB

also on a side question for the ati card is the

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB better then the 3870 please help

asking which is better is going to get you a lot of different opinions.

The GX2 out performs the 3870 X2....

The 4850 is better then the 3870....

The 4870 will be out within the week

i personally dont believe in choosing which one is better... lol this sounds weird but i just look for something that is within my price range and which one is better... im not an Nvidia or ATI fanboy.

Between the GX2 and The 3870x2... The GX2 is better, but the GX2 runs alot hotter (but i guess it depends on which manufactor you buy your ATI card from)

yes like Kodiak said, the 4850 is better than the 3870, and i personally would wait to see what the pricings on the 4870 will be before buying any new GPU's

Yeah - they're pretty much hitting it on the nose. I personally like nvidia quite a bit better...I just don't think AMD is putting out great products right now. They're not terrible, don't get me wrong, but I feel they are sub-par compared to nvidia. anyway - it really comes down to price-point. Also, remember that the new AMD card hasn't been tested a whole lot in "real-world" situations...just in benchmarks and whatnot. If you're not totally decided, I'd wait a couple months and see how the new card fares, and also see how its drivers hold up to real games and other programs.

9800 GX2. Dude trust me, GX2 is the best you can buy right now. That card can even sometimes outperform the GTX 280!

Honestly, i've never like ATI because Nvidia has never let me down and run whatever I throw at it.

I have ATI 3870, and my neighbor has Nvidia 9800GT.

Both brands are good; really, it's your preference - choose one and you'll probabbly like it.

One thing - his card sounds like a swamp buggy when the fan gets going; Nvidia cards are kinda loud, so if you like quiet PC's you might want to go with ATI.

I think you either mean 9600gt (I have it and love it) or 9800gtx. Probably the 9600 is what you mean because mine is kinda loud but I don't care. 9800GX2 is what i'm aiming for next.. possibly a GTX 280 when the price drops.

One other thing to remember - AMD video cards excel at pushing video (i.e. using your computer to watch movies...especially hi-def movies), and nvidia cards excel at gaming. So - think about how you're going to use your machine, and purchase from that perspective.

That is not to say that each company doesn't do both well - it's just that AMD specializes more in one, and nvidia in the other.

I'd follow what trykael has stated. If you're using your comp for gaming and sheer extensive gaming, i'd opt to go with Nvidia. I've heard some rumors that they can be a pain to work in certain settings but that shouldn't bog you down too much. ATI wins the ease of use category definately by my book but that's not to say Nvidia is absolutely horrible.

If the performance is nearly the same I tend to go with nvidia, solid drivers and ease of use. Overclocking is pretty easy with rivatuner as well.
