Question about my video card.

When I look at my video card specification it says

Chip Type: ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (0x7145)

Total Available Graphics Memory: 382 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 128 MB
Shared System Memory: 254 MB

My question is does the memory detail mean that only 128 MB of my video card is being used for video stuff?

And if Yes to the 1st Question

Does this mean that 254 MB is being used like a RAM or HD?

And if Yes to the 2nd Question

How can I up the memory for Video?

Or is this normal?

I am guessing your card has 128 MB, and the 254 MB is hard drive space being used for graphics calculations.

Its normal. I would suggest that if you can to buy a better video card. It would take alot of stress off your prosessor/ram and speed up the over all speed of your computer. Video cards are getting pretty cheap these days. If you cant, you could over clock it. But be very careful in doing it because you can burn it up. Also you can use more virtual memory as ram/video memory. But I dont think there is a real advantage in doing so.

Shared memory is basically your video card taking it's share of RAM right off the top.

say you have 512MB ram, and your video card says it has 256MB shared memory...


well you basically only have 256MB garenteed RAM. the other is still usable until your video card needs it. Shared memory is much slower then Dedicated memory.

Only reason I ask this is becaues I know that my video card is either 254 or 512 MB.

If your computer is telling you: Dedicated Video Memory: 128 MB, it means that you have the 128 mb version of your card, or 128 mb of ram is on the card itself.
