I totally, totally agree with Sleeping Dogs.

I bought it really cheap during a sale on Steam and got most of the DLCs. I thought, at this price, why not. At best I'm going to play a Hong Kong style GTA and that's it. I ended up loving it and the story will throw you a gut punch in terms of drama. It's so good.

Even the Chinese ghost/Halloween themed DLC was awesome, I think. It was hilarious.

For me it has to be Guild Wars 2. Game is over 10 years old now and still gets regular updates/fixes/content added. Just had it's 3rd expansion released and they have announced a 4th is on the way.

Great game and let's you play it however you like.

I know its a bit late but this is only from the start of the year so not much has changed but how is terraria underrated/underplayed?
on steam alone is has a "Overwhelmingly Positive" review with 795k reviews
and is the 10th most sold game EVER

Sleeping Dogs is definitely a good one mentioned.

The first "Mafia" game is INCREDIBLY underrated. Fantastic story, great great music. The game mechanics are a touch wonky in certain bits (driving, mostly) but, the story was super well done. I think a heck of a lot more people have played Mafia 2 and 3, but never touched the first.

I'd say Disco Elysium is an underrated game. You don't see many people talk about it despite how good it is. It's been ranked #1 game by pcgamer for 3 years in a row! It's an RPG about a detective who drank himself to amnesia. It has a wonderful art style, characters, skill system, plot, full voice over, thousands of dialogue, etc. AND IT'S ON SALE! 75-78% off (it only costs $10). Watch a review or two and consider it.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is also a great narrative game. Might want to wait for a sale depending on whether you like the type of a game or not.

Pikuniku came out in 2019. It's a short and cute platformer where you play as a little red guy. The real thing is the soundtrack, once you hear it you also start hearing it in hundreds of youtube videos.

Indie games generally speaking.

Of course, there are also independent games that defy expectations. There are indie games with substantial budgets, indie games that are not innovative, and indie games that are prohibitively expensive. However, the traits mentioned above are typically found in independent games.

Broken Reality. Little buggy but fantastic. would recommend Broken Reality 3000 when it comes out. Not sure if it will have MnK support since it is a VR game.
