I’ve been hooked on watching Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time speed runs lately and thought of a few games at first until I realized there’s potential for an entire map. This game undoubtedly brings nostalgia for the many of us that grew up exploring in an open world on N64 before or as the internet was starting. If any map makers wanna take this on, I’d be happy to brainstorm more concepts and games with you.

Main Cells – These would be tree houses with an interior identical to Link’s when first starting the game out.

Wipeout – I imagine a simple wipeout over water with the same platforms found in the main forest village. The same type and bridge and fencing for CTs to stand on would be ideal as well. That would be to keep it close to main cells though. An alternative could be using the Whirling-Scythe found in the game as well

Maze – Replicating the maze in the forest, this could be a series of intersections with dark entrances (and perhaps random seed each map) for T’s to navigate with teleporters that bring them to the beginning (or kill). The concept mixes maze and color tower for a quick race to who can guess the intersections that lead to the end, which could be the stump the skull kid is found on or a Triforce platform.

Climbs – With a forest theme, a climb could be easily implemented nearby main cell area and designer could use full discretion to come up with something interesting. Climbs based on Death Mountain or Zora’s River areas could be easily created as well.

Secret Crawlspace – Similar to the one in the game to obtain the first sword, a short, hidden vent could lead to a sword with powers like the Minecraft one.

Race – Lon Lon Ranch has a race with horses, which can be replaced with 5-8 go-karts going around the ranch (with horse models if possible). Another race idea could implement The Running Man (perhaps following his line directly or be slowed) or Dampe the grave keeper (through corridors dropping small flames behind him).

Dodge Course – In addition to standard “avoid these platforms, stay on others” concept, large stretches can be occupied by enemies shooting projectiles as shown below.

The Deku Scrubs and Mad Scrubs would be planted on land, the latter firing quicker (with only knockback). The Octoroks would be in water emerging to pelt the prisoners with projectiles as well.

Minefield – In addition to the typical bombs that could be utilized, an alternative would be a field with a desert theme with Leevers emerging to deal heavy damage to the prisoner. But perhaps more appropriate would be a Death Mountain theme using Baby Dodongo, which canonically explode.
1672771682258.png

Shooting Gallery – Similar to Quake's, prisoners would shoot at Eye Switches for a prerequisite amount.
1672771698886.png

Lasers – This would implement the Beamos found in the cavern on death mountain. They’d fire at random times for 3-6 seconds.
1672771710194.png

Find the Cucco – A room dedicated to the game’s iconic chickens will be filled with 15-20 and prisoners must slash the correct one to win the entire game. Best for LR (3-4 players).
1672771725271.png

Wallmaster – A CT or lucky prisoner controls a wallmaster on the rooftop of a game area that drops randomly which slams palm first on the ground (though picking them up then crushing or dropping them would be much more hilarious).
1672771741560.png

Soccer – I’d love to see a rolling Goron as the soccer ball with the goals being large holes of lava.
1672771755727.png

Bombchu Bowling Alley – A replica of the game’s mini-quest, players are given bombchus and must direct them into the black center. Easy would be a straight shot with increasing difficulties including obstacles in between, with the most extreme requiring the shot be taken by aiming at the wall for the bomchu to climb.
1672771773407.png

High Dive – This would take place on a cliff replicating the diving game in Zora’s Domain, complete with creepy fish dude standing there.
1672771793488.png

Death Crate – The simple solution would be to use textures to make the cube look like a Jelly creature, but if it were possible, I’d like the game to be based off the Peahats, a flying, blade spinning monster. Another option could be avoiding the enormous spinning pot found in Goron City. Managing to jump directly into the pot while spinning will reward the player with a Heart Piece (+25 max HP) and stopping the game for everyone else. This could be done by creating an arena with platforms that the handles could still reach yet just barley high enough to succeed the jump.

1672771829841.png

Health Areas – Small areas with breakable pots would contain hearts that fully heal the player.

Secrets:

In addition to typical secret entrances, there could be walls that only open with a well-placed frag grenade simulating the ones only accessible with bombs in the game. One item that could be found would be the Heart Container, not only fully healing but increasing max health by 25. Another item could be the Deku Shield that would hover in front of the prisoner low so that when they crouch, they are protected from bullets for the durability of the shield (which also dissolves on contact with fire or lava).

1672771879163.png

The three spiritual stones could be hidden in different parts of the map that unlocks the Hylian Shield, a larger and permanent shield that lasts the entire round. A Hyrule Crest will also appear above the player’s head signifying their accomplishment.
1672771899089.png

Cuccos could be roaming around that if a player were to attack repeatedly would summon a storm of them to fly into the area. They could deal damage only to the player who summoned it, possibly killing them but creating a distraction, or it could be a secret without the sacrifice, only creating a distraction.

Grottos are small holes that teleport Link to a secret area with usually a chest. These can be placed at random or under breakable structures and contain guns or grenades.

I might edit this in the future, this is just what I came up with an hour of sitting down. Typing the last sentence, I thought of an interactable asset that plays an ocarina to teleport prisoners to different areas. While I can (or couldn’t) understand the technical challenges that would go into some of the ideas, I believe many of them have potential to be created. This post is less of a request or suggestion and more meant to be inspiration for a current or future map creator keeping JB alive with unique concepts on familiar games. I hope this creates at the very least an interesting thread for fans of the game that have found as much nostalgia looking at these pictures as I have.

You have the idea, the imagination. Time to make it a reality. Download Hammer++ and start mapping ~

zach zach & @mouse pouch check this out!

Reminds me a lot of jb_paradise_lost. This map could def be really cool, but with def take a lot of time and effort to get it to look good. Finding and importing textures and models are def the hardest thing to do and might not even exist in some cases. Would love to see a mapper make this in the future though!
