This is NOT intended for the novice. If you are the type to try to get the most out of your video driver even to the extent of modifying your own, then I wanted you to know that I was successful at getting my ATI 345M to work on my older laptop with the latest DoD. This information is available on the internet as there are user groups that still try to support my old ATI 345M. Others may have better or different ideas.
There are limitations! The Game runs too slow for my taste on a full server using the video shared memory, very limited buffer, single pipeline, etc. etc. Things like grass, weeds, etc don't even show up on the screen. Obviously, my video chipset is unable to take advantage of the DirectX 9.0C driver function calls to the hardware, but because my driver is DirectX 9.0C compatible, I was able to run the game. There is just only so much that software can do for older hardware.
If you are the tweaker type, then you probably already know the following. The process involved removing and updating drivers which is NOT a simple process if it is to be done thoroughly. There were registry modifications, purging backup files and certain driver related files in the Windows directories, and patching the new ini files to allow my ATI 345M to use the newer driver. After this, turn off the unsupported features in the driver settings as the chipset is still running with its old hardware. I have a much newer system I play with, but I ran through this to see if it could be done.
After all of this, I have to recommend that you consider buying newer hardware so that you can use today's software.
