Connectivity Problem

so for the past monthish (not just for DoD) i have been getting lag spikes and sometimes no ping at all. what i mean is that ill join a game and everything will look alright but i cant interact with anything. everyone is frozen and after a minute or two ill get disconnected. ive tried resetting my modem/router...restarting computer. adding ports. running tracerts to check connection (which by the way is all good). one thing i checked into was my network adapter driver. the date for it is 2001. i went to linksys site to get a new driver. found one. downloaded it but dont know where to put the file. any help on both subjects would be much appreciated. thank you.

i have this problem sometimes. are you using DSL? some DSL companies require your phonelines to have DSL filters that are small boxes. before i never installed them and when my phone would rang, id get disconnected. try calling your isp for help
 
Updating your network card drivers will rarely do anything for you. The tech is so mature and old at this point that the drivers don't really change much. However, it is worth a shot.

To install a new driver on Windows XP:

First, if it is zipped, unzip it to a folder, and remember where the folder is.
Right click on My Computer and choose Manage
Click on Device Manager
Find the device on the list (For a network card, it will probably be under Network adapters)
Double click on the device name
Click on the Driver tab
Click Update Driver
Choose 'No, not this time' and hit next
Choose 'Install from a list of specific location (Advanced)' and click Next
Choose Search for the best driver in these locations and Include this location in the search.
Click the browse button and find the folder where the driver is
Click Next

What happens next depends on whether or not there was really a compatible driver in the location you specified. If there was, it will find it and attempt to install. Otherwise, it will tell you that you already have the best driver installed.
 
Remember also that cable is shared bandwidth among many houses in your area. So, someone nearby who likes to do big downloads or is just abusing the network can effect you as well. Cable companies really don't care about latency or game performance, so it might just be something you have to deal with. If your cable company is particularly bad, you might want to consider trying DSL for a while to see if any of the local DSL providers are any better.

In Houston, where I live, Time Warner was absolutely awful. The connection would go down for hours at a time every morning, and they couldn't fix it no matter how hard they tried.

There may also be something wrong with your computer, but that sort of thing is hard to diagnose over the internet - I would just be taking shots in the dark.
 
alright ill give the driver thing a shot....d*** people abusing the internet. pardon my language.
