I paid 647.53 USD (including tax) for the following PC... Needed a new one, my laptop wasnt cutting the cheese...

2gig ddr2 ram
250g hd
AMD 64 Athrlon x2 (dual core)
e-GeForce 8400 GS (I dont run dell progs or hardware, so the issues that are common with it dont affect me)
Everything else is pretty common.

Just asking... so did i get a good deal?
 
Do you know what type of DDR2 RAM? Is it 667MHz? 800MHz? (or if it says something like PC5400 or whatever, post that).

I'm guessing the hard drive was SATA-II (aka SATA 300)?

What type of Athlon x2? Do you know the speed?

The "good deal" answer might depend on a little on the answers to those questions. It doesn't sound too bad to me. Depending on what speed things you actually got, I would say go to newegg.com and try to add all of the things into your cart and then compare the price (remember, you will need to add a case, possibly a power supply if the case doesn't include it, a motherboard, and a CD/DVD-ROM of some sort).

Depending on the speed of the hardware, I'm guessing you might have been able to build it for a little bit cheaper, but Dell is a business, so they have to charge something extra to make money and stay afloat. The markup on PC's isn't much anymore though.
 
Logic would say that you have a pretty low-end or entry level gaming system on your hands. for the money you spent you have something that will run anything but won't run it amazingly well. It's like you've just been given an old Camero or GTx or mustang ect and you're going to restore it piece by piece. Replace restore with upgrade and that sounds like the situation your in.

It's good, you'll love it, but be ready to set aside a grand or so and look into upgrades in the near future. Start small, ram OR processor OR GPU OR motherboard. Don't do everything at once and make sure you're 100% happy with what you decide to pick out.

You could've gotten better with the money but still a good deal

Well, i talked to the guy, he forgot to give me a windows key, so he apologized, gave me one and 2 more gigs of ram, they are 800 spd. so im sporting 4gig ram now... all ddr2 800. the Amd processer is... 2.6... im thinking of upgrading the cpu to the Phenom model later on... dunno tho... So i got... all toghether now.

Good deals? Or bad deals? (hopes the extra info is helpy)

it's late and i may be wrong on this but if you install XP it won't recognize more than a certain about of ram around 2gigs. so the extra 2 gigs will be kinda pointless unless you're running vista. If this information is wrong, please ignore this.

on second thought it looks like vista, you'll use the 4gigs.

Again i reference my upgrading analogy: It'll run just about anything on the market really. The phenom will probably work fine but if i were you i'd go for a new GPU first. 8800gts(92) or a variant on the 9800g(variable) all go for reasonable prices. Though they tend to range quite a bit.

Also, if i'm correct, don't AMDs run a LOT hotter than Intel cpus? if that's the case you may want to look into an aftermarket CPU cooler. AC freezer 7 pro should work just fine. Unless you want to overclock, then i'd start eyeballing a high end tuniq or thermaltake.

DUDE U GOT 2GB RAM FOR FREE? im jealous

Badger is correct. I'm not sure on XP but someone told me 32bit OS (including vista i THINK) cant detect more than 3GB of ram.
 
32 Bit Operating systems recognize about 3.5 GBs of RAM, if you got a 64-bit you can recognize over 1 TB of RAM, but you will not need that much for at least 4 years...

This includes Xp or Vista.
 
actually.. if moore's law is correct you'd only be running about 64gigs of ram in 4 years.. it'd take roughly 8-10 for the TB marker in necessary ram usage.

this is assuming that from this point on ram scales at double every 18 months (following moore's law.)

but yeah ./tangent off.
If you're on a 32 bit system you probably won't be recognizing all 4 gigs. Not that that's really a problem since 2 were free. hang on to them at any rate.
 
With the Service Pack one, all versions of windows, recognize upto 100+ gig ram, or so I have been reading... *shrug* Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, pwny time!
