Wonder how people get insane headshots or how lag compensation works in TF2

This is a wonderful video made by GMAN from the TF2 teamfortress group.
It shows how the lag compensation works in conjuction with the hitbox.
It will also explain how you can run behind cover and still be shot by a sniper.
IMO it shows how face stabs, backburner not critting etc etc happens when they should.
Personally I always thought classes like sniper should have to lead the person they are shooting at to hit them. EXAMPLE: when you are bird hunting and the bird is flying side to side, You do not shoot directly at the bird but a little in front of him to hit him.
I really look forward to reading others comments on this video.
thanks

What the video presents is inaccurate, as he's running a local server with no lag and has used console commands to create a false "exploit" in the game.

Read about lag compensation here:
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_Multiplayer_Networking#Lag_compensation

The only false exploit that I could see in the video is when he shows you the different effects of adjusting the lag compensation.

the video is showing in motion what the picture in the above link shows

but then again "I'm not a smart man Jenny' (Forest Gump quote) and your understanding of this I'm sure is much better than mine.

thanks for the info

*sigh*

I just tried the console command and it didn't help me at all. I don't know if it has anything do with it that I live in Germany.
I would love to be able to snipe on eGO servers. :(

Captain Calle, you should get Clan permission and start up a European local eGO server!

2 simple answers

Headshots- aim at the head, directly in front of where the head will be, or at the feet (when spraying in cs source)
i know its not the answer u were looking for..... some people still dont know about spraying at the feet though...

and lag compensation *puts on flamer proof helmet* MUAHAHA

upgrade internet connection ^^

Captain don't feel bad
I am positively the worst sniper there is and I live in Fort Worth Texas so my ping is always good.
I couldn't hit the broad side of a bullet with a barn. (hmm that dont sound right) lol
I couldn't hit a sleeping heavy

I actually tried turning it OFF in 2fort today.. its REALLY hard to snipe when it's off. I guess it could be because i'm used to the normal way. >.>

A basic explanation of this is that the server calculates insta hits on a "You hit what you aim at" basis.

This means that if you shoot somone on your screen with an insta hit weapon (shotgun/revolver/sniper rifle), your hit counts.

This means for example if a scout sees a heavy and runs around a corner when the heavy starts firing, for that duration of time that the scout was still moving in the heavys line of fire on the heavy players client is sending fire/time stamp information to the server. The server then verifies based on lag compensation the position of the scout on the heavies client and does the hit calculation.
The scout player may have actually on his client ran around and found cover then as the server was doing the hit calculation he continued taking damage even though out of the line of fire from his client perspective.

It's easiest to see this in snipers while speccing them, because there is no lag compensation in spectator view. What you will see is the target pass by the sniper dot and continues as normal then dies. Depending on the sniper lag is what determins how far the target continues for before the hit is calculated and the target is killed.

a

so gun based bullet type wepons are hitscan?

i never have a problem snipeing because im used to UT's shock rifle which is a hitscan wepon. So if your able to hit a player on the other side of the map with a shock rifle, or cordinated enough to hit a shock core for a combo while moving in an diffrent direction, then sniping in TF2 is a snap.

What? I'm confused a little.

So you're saying that any weapon with bullets like a soldier's minigun are hitscan? And the soldiers rocket launcher is not?

Yes the RL is not because it launches a projectile which is tracked by the server not the client.

This is why no matter how lagged somone is if they shoot a rocket at you and you move out of the way, you wont still get hit.
Projectiles have 0 lag because they are calculated on the server

as a fellow sniper, i suggest you just shoot at the head and almost 99% of the time you will kill them. start aiming for the head and youll find out that its much easier to pull off crazy things when you start recognizing the way that things work. just practice aiming for the head, and you shouldnt have much trouble after a couple of weeks.
