That is amazing! Now I have a new project for my old paintball gun if I get bored!

my guess is it starts with some standard webcam motion traction softwere.

but hes got to identify the moving target quickly (thus the testing of how much and how quickly you have to move to "see" the target)

then out of that motion traction softwere identify the area (what pixels changed) and convert that to a polar coordinate system for your servo controlled base.

Likely doesn't have any range info included (the magnitude of the polar vector) although theoretically possible to add with a laser range finding device ment to "track" the same target that the webcam sees. You would then use this range info to adjust the elevation up (or down) to account for ballistics characteristics of the paint ball. (but again, the ballistic characteristics arnt all THAT good to begin with and your only talking about ranges under what.... 30 yards? so it likely doesnt matter anyway)

a simple on/off servo is used for the fireing trigger, as soon as it can acquire a target it goes to shoot. and keeps it held down till the target dissapears (or stops moving)

my guess is its only motion sensitive. if you ran into the frame and froze, youd get hit till you stopped moveing, but you could stand right infront of the thing and as long as you didnt move (or quickly enough to meet the threshold setting) i would think you are part of the background.
 
i love these ^_^

they've been doing competitions for these at defcon for a few years now(defcon 16 is in august i believe). they're surprisingly easy to put together. heres the link to the hack-a-day news post, since theres more on there than the defcon info alone.

I wonder how far it can detect a moving target, hookup a paintball sniper rifle to it and watch it shoot enemies from really long range

Two bad things about that is that in paintball, there really isnt a "sniper" to say. If you want range, you have to use a flatline barrel, which makes the gun HORRIBLY inaccurate. ( Tippmann 98 customs, a5's and X7s are the only gun to have these, unless you get an apex barrel, but thats another story)


Then with a larger range, it may have a harder time finding and staying engaged to targets and a greater chance to confuse it could diminish the effectiveness.


I think he has a good base gun for it, ions ( the gun used in it) is pretty accurate and performs well.
 
He is using a notebook with an OS hooked to this thing, imagine if all the unnecessary software gets eliminated the production price could drop dramatically, also this thing is incredibly fast, the reaction time is in the milliseconds, I would not be surprised if this kid gets hired by a major corporation or gets arrested by our oversensitive government for making an automatic weapon with lethal potential tagging him a terrorist and sending him to Guantanamo.


Anyways, I wish him the best, I always enjoy watching people using their creativity for something productive.

Lets hope he's doesn't become the future founder of Stark Industries. ;)

well several reasons ... this motion tracking paintball gun doesnt distinguish friend and foe it just tags whatever moves .. which is also a waste of costly ammo when its not shooting at things people want it to be shooting.
