Ah yes, some of you are old enough to remember the Amiga 500.
If not, take 5 mins out of your day to take a sweet history lesson.
Back in 1988 (20 YEARS ago) when Mac's were green and black, PCs were just trying to develop EGA and VGA games with bleeps and beeps for sounds; you could by an Amiga 500.
What was an Amiga and what was it capable of? Well it blew everything else off the table at the time.
Specs:
- 7 mhz of pure speed
- 512 kb RAM expandable to 1 MB
- 800k floppy, no hard drive
- Dedicated sound processor chip separate from main CPU. Capable of 16 bit stereo sound and full digital samples
- Dedicated video chip separate from main CPU capable of 4096 simultaneous colors
Remember folks, this was 20 YEARS ago.
And with all of this seemingly puny hardware (7 megahertz, 512 kb of RAM, and 1 floppy disk) this is what the Amiga could produce (nothing is faked, this is actual video and music):
