audio issues?

So last week, after gaining my shiny new "G," I decided I should probably download and get used to ventrilo. Shortly after installing the program I started experiencing issues with my audio input [but I'm not entirely certain the two events are related]. Other players say that there is a lot of static and nothing else when I try and use voicecomm. I thought maybe my headset had gone bad, so i pulled the backup out -- same thing. Then, I thought that maybe I'd been a little rough with the front mic jack [don't ask], so I tried the main -- same thing. I've changed just about every audio setting I know of to try and get the problem fixed, but no luck.

I'm using on-board audio on an Abit IP-35 PRO ... I'm hoping somebody out there can help me out.

what bout ur volume control settings? what version of windows you have?

Windows XP SP2

and i've tried tons of combinations of volume control settings, low / high mic input, compression / no compression, mic boost / no mic boost, etc ... and when i use microsoft sound recorder, i can *barely* hear in the background what ppl are talking about. I think it just gets amplified when I'm using the in-game voicecomm. I'm pretty sure I've narrowed it down to the on-board audio [i don't have a sound card in this machine], so i'm gonna take my old sound card out of my old system and see if that helps. Otherwise, Abit owes me another motherboard!

ok, i installed the old creative sc, and it seems like the crazy static went away. i was worried there for a sec, thought maybe my power supply was starting to go.
