As I was at the Comic-Con this year, here in San Diego, I found a great piece of software in the Gaming University, home of all things PC gaming. BitDefender is reputable name in anti-virus and internet security products, and they've recently come out with a variant to their security products called "GameSafe".
Now, I am a pretty advanced user, and I have not used any form of anti-virus or firewall on my gaming rig for over a year without any big problems. I don't like having this software mainly due to resource consumption, annoying alerts, planting itself into your computer, among other reasons to hate this sort of software as a gamer. Norton seems to be the worst of these...
So, I got a trial of this GameSafe, and I have to say, I am very pleased with it. It is a relatively small package that seems to get the job done very silently. It has a unique "Game Mode" that you can activate manually or by a keyboard combo, that disables all alerts that would minimize the game, disables any scheduled scanning, put resource consumption on the lowest setting, yet still keeps your computer safer. I've been using this for nearly a week now and it's been great. Picked out a couple non-destructive Trojans, but Trojans nonetheless from my computer, played TF2 among other games without any sort of problem. The first time I ran TF2 it did ask whether to allow the process to run, but after that it learns quickly. It is very customizable in the way that it runs, and even uses very little CPU time/memory while not in game mode. It is also pretty cheap compared to big name junk anti-virus protection. I'm going to buy it for my desktop, and possibly for my laptop as well. I'd highly recommend you check it out, especially if you've had a bad experience like Norton (resource hog, system controller, alerts, random scans, etc...).
Finally an AV/IS program I don't mind being on my computer!
