With the bonus gone

Welcome to the soldier's world, who's been nerfed more than any other class since the nerfs started. I bet that air blast gets a nerf as well.
In my opinion the rocket self damage was needed, the soldier is not a close combat class and he shouldn't beat a pyro by simply shooting a few times at his own feet. You just need to adapt to use the shotgun more or to actually juggle the pyro BEFORE he can get to you, which will be harder now because ther are many airblasts but you can fire rockets faster than they can reflect.

Air blast all the way. Nothing saves you (by pushing away a lit enemy) or busts ubers like air blast. I think most pyros will go this way. And then pyro will get another nerf for their unmatched and frustrating ability to destroy ubers.

I suppose the one advantage to this for pyros who choose to stick with the backburner will be that people might start to feel safe about turning around to run away from pyros.

The problem is it's all counter-productive. The class shouldn't be CQC, but they're forced to when:

  • Rockets move slowly
  • Rockets have damage drop-off over distance

This leaves the soldier forced to use them in CQC to have any effectiveness. And Valve isn't helping by producing shoddy attempts at making the class use the... shotty... (See what I did there? Yeah, not funny, I know), which is more of a backup weapon, by nerfing rockets and their functions.

Well, I think soldier's should use their shotty more often. I mean, any pyro worth his or her salt knows how to use a shotty. While soldier should primarily focus on the rocket launcher, he should actually have to use the shotty now and then. Besides, a soldier can juggle. I rarely play soldier and even I can juggle. Pyro was supposed to be king at CQC and I hardly think it was fair that the soldier did more damage in that range and lived because of the extra 25 health over pyro. The nerf was needed. Now if only they'd do something about those pesky demomen. I am not looking forward to his update.

Hands down, the air blast makes the backburner a token item without the health bonus.

tldr: BUT: as said here
I don't think the unlocks are suppose to be upgrades in the sense that one is better then the default. I think they're just suppose to give you different options and a more well rounded game.
i agree to this. now i hate the removing of the 50hp too. but now its like a true question of "What is more important, a frontal assault with defense (comp blast), or sneaky attack with (pretty much) 100% back crits?" i of coarse switched off of backburner immediatly, cuz without the extra hp it doesn't really help me, cuz i'm pretty much always a frontal attack kinda person. and the airblast (even though i suck at using it) can be very helpful.
its more balanced now between the two (backburner/regular flame thrower) with pros and cons, INSTEAD of the Old-Backburner where pretty much EVERYONE used it. now you'll see both i'm sure.

I've played the pyro the most out of any class and I'd have to go wit the crit. I find it much more useful especially in ambushes. Plus, who can't dodge rockets coming straight at your body lol?

Compression blast, i haven't unlocked the backburner adn probably never will some i'm sticking with the original :)

I'm glad it's gone, now I can use air compression to my hearts content. The health bonus made the pyro too strong, with it gone now I can not worry about doing poorly compared to using the back burner, air compression for the win.

I was using the older gun anyway... :D

I think Valve need to make the compression blast use a little more ammo. It currently uses 25 ammo. Maybe change it to 40 ammo so a full pyro has up to 5 blasts instead of 8. They should also make it so the pyro can compression blast jump. :)

thats a great idea a compression blast jump but it would be annoying if ur not the pyro :)

Well, Soldiers have their rocket jump and Demos have their pipe bomb jump. It'd only be fair to give the Pyro his jump. :D The Heavy is too fat.. so no jump for him... :(

haha @ compression blast jump...

Yes please pyro, leave the ground for me so i don't have to juggle you with my first shot, i have a chance of already blasting you around the map since you so kindly jumped on your new ability !

wont happen

i don't agree with that... i think the you shouldn't be able to do compression blast jumps, i mean it would be fun, but yet an unfair advantage with a class that needs to just STAY down on the ground :D

Air compression jumping would be madness.
I can already see the problems that wait for all the snipers on 2Fort.
With that being said....
I still enjoy the backburner.
Most of the time when I play Pyro I am ambushing (or trying to)
So I guess it fits my style of play better.

You can't dodge rockets that hit walls right next to you bounce you to the left and all of a sudden one hits you in the face...

Or the ones that only are aimed at the ground (orange x3) almost the whole game.

Soldier can still shoot at his feet and get the damage reduction, he just needs to hit the space bar prior :D. Anyway, soldiers are forced into CQC because they are so slow. A pyro can keep distance and fire the flare gun, plus the air blast, plus he doesn't reload the flamethrower. If a pyro (or anybody) gets too close to a soldier or heavy, it's voluntary or bad luck, and he can always use the air blast if things don't look good. Of course, this takes skill.

I advise you to stay away from walls and back up when rockets are aimed at the ground.
