Video Card help!

I would look for an 8800GT over any 8600. You can find them for under $120 shipped, and they're GREAT.

I don't really like Nvidia, but they own that pricepoint with that card...

Check out slickdeals forums you can usually find awesome deals for very good cards. Also frys might have a really good 8800gt for like 130 just check every friday ad. Make sure you do your research though if planning to buy any computer hardware cause there are plenty to deals to be had.
 
Ok, you guys got me convinced on the 8800GT especially since it really isn't all that much more. What is really confusing me is all the cards look the same to me but the prices are all over the place.

Should I just go ahead and get the one closest to my price range or what?

Should I be scared of the "open box" cards?

I just don't know a whole lot and really don't want to screw this purchase up.

Yeah, go with the 8800GT.
I have an ASUS 8600GT 512, and it's OK. It plays source games at 1440x900 on all high setting (no antialiasing) and I get about 35-50fps with very few slow downs (sometimes if there are 20 people running around in my screen shooting rockets it'll drop to 20fps or so), so it's fine, but on games that are a little more GPU resource heavy, like Bioshock, it just doesn't quite cut it. It comes close, but just not quite.
The one advantage to the 8600 is that it takes FAR less power than a 8800. That's part of why it doesn't perform as well, but it can be good if you have a old or small PSU.
 
thats a nice card but this is one of the first zotac cards i have seen. Anyone else have good experiences with zotac?
 
whats your max res?
if your like me and its like 1280x1024 or less, newegg had a 256mb 8800gt for $77 a couple weeks ago

but if you want real bang for buck, the 4850 is the way to go
