Microsoft Midori - A future without Windows?

Well from the looks of it, Microsoft wants to put Windows in the past. They want to start with a whole new OS platform called "Microsoft Midori" This all seems kind of weird when Windows 7 is in the making.
Is it true? Could it be? A future without Windows?

That sounds really cool! I heard that the next version of Windows was gonna come out in 2010 but from the looks of this, I'm guessing its Midori, not Windows that we may see in 2010
 
I think it would be dumb for Microsoft to abandon the Windows name. What person doesn't know what you mean when talking about pcs when you say windows. If they change it to Midori most people wouldn't know what this is. That is just my opinion.
 
Midori is probably the codename and they'll probably change it. I mean Midori XP sounds kinda funny.

Why would they us XP again for an OS name? They aren't going to replace all Windows OS names with Midori, they want to start making a new OS called Microsoft Midori.

From all I can read this sounds like its aiming to use less machine resources than Windows. (Cuts down on power use.) Also sounds like its trying to get into some of the areas Linux and Mac have been in for years. (Introducing the "New" features for Microsoft LinuxOSX)

Well that sounds awesome! There are things I like more about Mac and Linux than I do about windows. Down side about Mac and Linux is their incompatibility with games :o So if Microsoft would implement more Mac and Linux features into their OS that would just be fantastic! :D
 
Eh, i'm skeptical about Microsoft abandoning Windows. Too many businesses run on various versions of Windows, and because of that I think that it would be difficult to get a good percentage of them switched over to an entirely new OS.

Microsoft is still having problems with corporations switching from XP to Vista.

Ditto. Face it vista was a nice thought that needed way more improvement before going to market. If this Midori, or whatever, comes out I hope it is better than half baked vista.

Microsoft isn't ditching Windows. Midori is just a test that they're doing. Has something to do with Cloud Computing, nothing like what we use.

Actually we do use Cloud Computing. Big time. All Cloud Computing is is internet / network based computing.

This web site is a testament to the clans cloud. Other parts of the clans cloud would be its servers.

My guess is that Midori is the new server OS for Microsoft. Taking in things from the basic Linux builds that lets them be nice and efficient server OS'.

Microsoft wont drop windows in any case, their even developing windows for hand-held devices. They wouldn't drop windows.
 
Not that long ago, Microsoft tried to expand it's relationship with Novell, the company that currently owns Unix...I wondered, when I had heard the news, if Microsoft intended to go that way...Not that the story you link to confirms or denies that...But really with the security issues that Windows has, it's not surprising that they would move in the direction of abandoning it.

I guess I think it's in most people's best interests if Windows is put to rest and a better broadly distributed OS took it's place. One that is more secure and less clumsy.

"More Secure" is entirely relative. A new OS may be more secure for awhile, but eventually some group or person will find a weakness or an exploit to create one.
 
Dr. Rick is right. But so is Sardaukar. There was a hacking "test" about 6 months ago. A 10k prize went to the person who won, the "test" was 3 laptops, one with Windows XP (or Vista can't remember), one with Ubuntu Linux, and one with MacOSX.

Most people who think that Windows would have been hacked first but it was the Mac, a guy had a Safari exploit that got him in the laptop in around 3 minutes. That's just an example of one little exploit that broke the security of an OS. (The Ubuntu comp didn't get hacked into for like a month.)

So yeah It'll be somewhat secure till a nice exploit comes out.
