I am in full agreement. This is a war over land and respect in my opinion. Georgia attacked South Ossetia and began shelling Tskhinvali. Russia is retaliating.

Doesn't NATO recognize South Ossetia as part of Georgia anyway?--I think that rubbed Russia wrong.

Georgia might as well be the state, it's about as pro-American as Georgia the state. Russia's probably been trying to do this for a while, but I don't think they've bombed a city. They claim to be going in to help the citizens, they have no reason to bomb a city. If they bomb a city everyone will be on their backs.

In case anyone didn't know by the way, theres an oil line that goes through Georgia.

Thanks for reminding me Frap, my stepdad is serving on the Turkish borders. Something tells me the trigger-happy Turkish government is going to decide that since Armenia won't give them a reason to invade again, they'll try to get involved in this. Itching feeling my Stepdad won't be coming to Scotland for a while. -.-

What I thouhgt was a sneaky move was the Russians moved in while Both the Russian President and Putin aswell as Bush and other World Leaders were at the Olympic Opening Event. And russia did not just attack them for no reason, there has always been conflict (georgia attacked them first)

Well, here's some insight:

Georgia has been wanting to take back South Ossetta for quite a while now after they separated from the country. Georgia finally pushed a little too far and Russia got pissed. Georgia has a standing army of 37,000 US and NATO trained troops and technology purchased from the US. Russia has a standing army of 1.1 million. The key here is Georgia is a small nation and Russia can only approach from one sector: the north. Georgia's highly-trained 37,000 troops can easily hold off upwards of 50,000-70,000 Russian troops. Georgia knows its landscape. Its like trying to invade Switzerland - high mountains and a small country with a well-trained military. This could go on for quite a while, and it probably will. Neither side will back down.

Russia wants NATO and the US to send reinforcements to help Georgia. Why? Russia's military equipment is outdated - the country wants an excuse to update and engineer next-generation equipment. They chose a very cunning time to approach Georgia. Right now, the world has its eyes on the Beijing Olympics and the US is concentrated on domestic elections.

That is amazing. I will never understand this line of rationale.

Bush asked for the fighting to stop. I am sure it mainly is because during the Olympics the world is supposed to be at peace but I doubt that is going to happen.
