Since Valve is calling this the biggest update since Tf2 went live, you hafta assume it'll be 500-1000 megs.

So 3 million (or more) orange box users downloading possibly 1 gig of data, server admins updating up to 7 maps AND the heavy updates... Anyone see a possible disaster here for a few days? :p

They need to release a file through which people can predownload content, and the update will either give content to those who haven't downloaded it or will allow users who have already downloaded it to access it.

P2P downloading solves that problem. And no I'm not talking about downloading it from some pirating website through a Bit torrent client. Basically it allows users to download from other users as the update spreads like a web of people uploading it/downloading it rather than every one form the same servers. I'm not sure if Steam does that, but I'm 100% certain that's how WoW distributes updates.

Uh..the Pyro/Medic updates totalled less than 100 MB. I dont see how new Heavy unlocks + a couple of maps will even approach 200 MBs.

Yep, Valve will offer files for pre-download, plus there will be peer to peer sharing of files, PLUS I doubt it'll be anywhere near a gig. "Biggest update since release" doesn't mean "As big as release."

If Valve hasn't foreseen and planned for the difficulty of sharing a few hundred megs of data with a few million users, then they might as well raise the "Incompetent" flag immediately. If they haven't already. :)
