Ok i just got the thermaltake maxorb cpu cooler for my Q6600 quad. I was wondering if I should keep the fan speed at 1300rpm or 2000. Does increasing fan speeds on coolers really make much difference? this is my first time not using a stock cooler so im clueless. Thanks

The answer to your question is that the loss of thermal performance by lowering fan speeds is completely dependent upon the specific heatsink/fan combo. I looked up reviews for the Thermaltake MaxOrb Cooler, and found this.

As you can see in their chart, the temperature difference when switching from high fan-speed to low fan-speed was negligible. However, your results may vary depending on the overall airflow quality in your case and temperature of surrounding components.

Since you have an Intel CPU, you can use Intel Active Monitor which will show you different temperature readouts. You can use this program to monitor your system temperature under different loads with different fan speeds. Adjust as necessary to meet your cooling needs.

chrisbliss is totally right on the issue of your whole case needing to be efficient.
Also, as you might have noticed, higher the rpm, more noise you will get.
If you can stand the noise (also the ones around you) it's not a bad thing to keep your parts running cool as possible.

Going into a little bit why that is, heat is one of the biggest enemy for computers along with dust. The more heat is in your computer, the less of lifespan your components will have, especially if you over clock.
