Why is granary and gravelpit no longer played?

During the tf2 beta, those were two of the most fun maps around! 2fort was a deathmatch, always was, for a while was the most popular... Then noobs started playing dustbowl ALL DAY LONG and the whole landscape was changed.

But enough mumbling from a tf2 beta player, why aren't they played anymore?

Well, according to the rotational eGO server we once had back in the day, once Dustbowl would finish up and Granary would come on, it would either dip to about a half full server in the afternoons until 2Fort came on or would empty out completely in the mornings. Just never got popular in eGO (then again, no complete linear CP map has). I personally liked Granary. I liked Well more, but Granary was a good map.

As for Gravel Pit, many would say it's a good map. I don't care for it much, only because I started to hate the map once I get on defense and the team says "Don't defend A, everyone head to B." I refuse to give the map a chance, even if it has changed. For others, of course it's a good map, and it's set up perfectly. I guess the issue was at the time, it was the most difficult map admin wise, and I guess we decided to try other maps out as well.. Count completely answer this one.

P.S. Warpath is not a complete linear CP map. (That should save a few responses)

I enjoy Gravelpit, but it's not something I can play for an extended amount of time. 2 or 3 rounds, and I'm good. It's a solid map, but it's such a short game that things become repetitive.

Granary is one I'm not really sure on. I like 5 CP maps, but for some reason people just always seem to get steamrolled in Granary. Almost every time I've played on it, they've been really short games. No Warpath stalemates where you're trying to take the next point for 20 minutes. I really have no clue why that is. There seem to be many good places to set up SGs and stuff, but I just see it steamrolled constantly.

Back when we had a Gravel Pit server, it was always the hardest to get filled. It would fill, stay full for about an hour or so, die suddenly, and then stay empty until people seeded it back to full. It was on the chopping block for a long time and I believe that it finally got the axe due to the other maps coming out.

Granary was always a hit or miss in terms of keeping it full and was given up for other maps long ago.

Those are the reasons.

I'm actually not asking about the eGO servers, I can understand if people don't visit, you don't keep the server up.

I'm asking what happened?

Look at this december 9 2007 graph pulled from internet archive.

Look at how the popularity of some things completely reversed.

How did this happen?

They're awesome maps, I always waited for Gravelpit to come about in a rotating match. But hydro is another personal favorite I miss.

A lot of the old maps are replaced with the new, shinier toys.

It's not really the opposite. 2fort is still played a lot. What I'm wondering tho is why eGO took down the Orange_X server. I love that map!

Well if you look at that graph, gravil pit is played more then 2fort, and dustbowl is 4th, behind tc_hydro!

Guys, I just want to point out that not only such awesome maps as granary and gravelpit are abandoned, but also Hydro and cp_well (GASP), Cp version of well was like 1 of the most popular maps out there, so was gravelpit!:(

remember that graph is old. The current shows a slightly different story with there being 3 big maps, and then the rest. of course I see the new payload map doing well, as well as Steel.

This is current of as 8/22

People just like shiny new stuff that's how society works.

Look new iPhone, hype, buy, meh it's just a iPhone.

Look new iPhone 3G, hype, buy, meh it's just a iPhone with 3G and GPS.

Things come and go. It always happens, human beings are fickle creatures and they always want newer better stronger faster, etc. etc. Never satisfied never content.

I remember regardless, CP_Well did well, however it seemed like there was always something amiss with it. Matches going no where, expiring fast, no wins. I liked it, took a skilled player to build a sentry on top of that control tower.

I loved badlands. I just can never find a server playing it 24/7. I know it's because it never stays full but I always found that map to be fun. One of the few CP maps I liked. I don't like rotations because I get lucky and join the moment the map changes so I don't get to play the map that I joined for.
