Since I'm about to get a big plasma, I'm trying to convince myself to get bluray.

I had hddvd (still do), and it was great... When I got it 2 years ago and cable and satelitte had maybe 10 hd channels tops.

Now that I have directv premier, with over 100 channels, its a bit harder to convince myself...

I know bluray is better quality, and I suppose it would show off the plasma, but I dunno.

I would personally not get a blu-ray player. I mean, what's so good about it? I'm still using VHS. :) (Seriously.)

You might want to read up on it HERE.

That makes me want one. I recently bought and configured a under cabinet kitchen tv with no instructions.

Mainly because the intructions are too vague for everyone! And the sound resets! And these are on new units!

I hooked it up and attached a Zenith digital tv tuner to it. Works wonderful.

I like a challenge.

Why did you link me to that :(

Well, the question I have for you is what are you looking for with a blu-ray player?

I have my PS3, and it works great. I like the fact that I can dl a lot of content and still play blu-ray stuff with it. When you consider that a bluray disc can hold around 25 gigs of information per side, and a dvd holds ~4.5 gigs you can see that a lot more stuff will be put on a blu-ray in the future. There is also the feature to "upscale" dvds that, at least the PS3 has, doubles the lines displayed and will make even the old DVDs that you have appear clearer.

Ummm, vastly increased quality? Even regular DVDs can look terrible on a high-end TV; VHS looks like a war-crime.

I would get a PS3, its still basically the best blu ray player on the market, and only slightly higher priced than most... not to mention it can be used as a standalone media center, and oh yea, it plays games too.

Yes get a PS3 if you are going to get blu-ray. It's actually a lower price than most.

Believe it or not, the PS3 is the best blu-ray player out there (for a reasonable price)

-Supports all formats because you can update
-Supports BD live
-Digitial sound
-CHEAP
-Extra: you can game

I've bought the PS3 for the blu-ray...

(And if you don't like using the controller for a movie, you can buy a bluetooth remote for the PS3)

And if you are going to buy one, wait a bit (I've heard some rumors about a 160GB PS3)

heh i use my ps3 for any blu-ray. its worth the money since the 80 gig will be 400 soon

Well like I said, I have directv hd premier, the full package with Starz, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and regional sports networks.

I have over 100 channels in hd.

Would it still be a good idea to get a bluray player and 1 or 2 movies to show off how good the picture is?

I'm thinking I'll get The Dark Knight on blurray (When it comes on bluray). Obviously. Besides that though.......

Wait a little longer. They are working out the licensing and stupid things like that and once they do many other companies will begin producing blue rays. The price should drop significantly.

As for a reason, they are releasing Andrei Rublev and Walkabout in Bluray over at Criterion Collection.

Just buy a PS3.

A PS3 is just a bit more expensive than a blu ray player, and you also get to play the 3 or so games playing on the PS3

*zing!*

:-P
