Getting EVGA GeForce 8600GT

Choosing a Graphics Card for 300-watt PSU

You guys know if this card works well with the source engine? Maybe I'll get Crysis in the future too. I like the cheap price for it and some of my friends says I'll get some good FPS with it. Opinions?

Also for crysis you should be able to run everything on Medium at about 12 FPS. But if you use no antialising you should get about a average of 25 FPS.

con i dont think what you said is mostly true. i am running an 8500GT and when i play crysis on medium, i get around 35fps without anliasing
 
I have the 512mb version of that same card, and it works well with source games. I run 1400x900 highest settings and average around 40-45fps without any severe drops in frame rate. It runs cool and quiet, and while it's not the best card around, it works fine for me. The really nice thing to me is that it draws very little power, so it works well with computers with cheap/small capacity power supplies.
That said, I don't think that it's a card really capable of some of the higher demanding games, like Crysis. It meets the minimum requirements, but you'll have to run it on low to medium settings to get tolerable frame rates, and that sort of defeats the purpose of Crysis, right?
 
I'm running 2 8600GT's (OC Edition by Club3D) a get arround 100fps @ source games (all high settings, no AA)
 
I have that exact video card :P I get no lag unless I go into a server too far away. I had trouble connecting it but now it's all good

My Opinion:

Performance: 95%
Graphics: 80%
Speed: 100%
Overall: 85%

I run Crysis on high settings at about 30fps average with my 8800GT
 
I really have no idea whether I would get Crysis or not. I was just making an example. I'm not sure if I'll buy any huge demanding games like that. If I can play DX10 games though it'd be great. Even if the graphics aren't incredible, as long as their decent and at gaming FPS.

Someone complained that the GDDR2 memory, you might look for the ATI counter part of the 8600GT, the Radeon HD 2600XT, which I own and it works fine on all high for TF2, CS and DOD. I even have TF2 tweaked a little more to look better and don't lag at all :)

Looked at the Radeon HD 2600XT, found one on Newegg. $20! Can't argue with that price. Will it perform as well, if not better, than the 8600GT?

There's also the PowerColor one which is twice the video memory. And $40 after rebate And another PowerColor. :P

A lot of reviewers are saying the 8600GT is superior though.

the 8600GT might beat the 2600XT by a tiny margine but they're pretty much the same.
 
Ok, well I've been looking around and on Tom's Hardware people have said if the Radeon HD2600XT is GDDR4 it will perform better than the GeForce 8600GT. So I think I'm going to go with the PowerColor 2600XT one with the GDDR4 from my above post.
 
Yay, a 2600XT buddy. You do know if you can spend more get the 3870 or even the sexy 4870. I have no clue on how Nvidia's are priced as lately I've been looking more into ATI than Nvidia. I was intersted in Nvidia with it was in its 8-series but ATI's 4-series are pure awesomeness.
 
I'm making my decision today. Is it ok if I have a 300 watt power supply when the ATi website says a 400 watt supply is recommended for the 2600XT? But I was also looking at a Radeon 3650 on Newegg and the recommendation was 300 watt, so...

Well, since I can't use my 300-watt power supply on the two cards I've been looking at, I had to look for other ones. -.- Found two.

XFX GeForce 8600GT 512MB GDDR3
Sapphire Radeon 3650 512MB GDDR3

Both only require a minimum of my 300-watt power supply. I'm probably going to go with XFX. How do I know if it will fit in my case? Not that I've heard it's a big card, I'm just wondering.
 
if price is a definitely issue, then you'll be ok with that card - just don't expect to run anything TOO graphically intensive.

if you're willing to save up a little more, get something like this card. The 8800 is a much better card than the 8600. Just my two cents :-)
 
I'd personally stay away from the 8600GT and get either an 8800GT or even a 9600GT. From what I hear the 8800GS is pretty good too. Don't know about ATI products.

Might check out nVNews.net for more info on the 8 or 9 series cards.
